Wish there was a romhack that put back the original one. Even with the primitive GB soundchip it was better.

this should be quite possible. GBA games are able to make use of the Game Boy's 4 channels

Firered throwback has a GB sounds item you get by the beginning of the game
There's a patch that only adds this item if you want to play vanilla firered or leaf green
The only downside is that pokemon cries are too quiet
I like both soundtracks

HGSS is definitely the worst, there’s not a single remix I prefer over the originals. They tried too hard to make the OST sound more prestigious and complex.

From a musical standpoint LGPE is probably the only really good OST they've made for a Switch game. PLA is probably second but sometimes songs are a bit on the busy side, but I think they were going for that vibe.

What pisses me off the most about the HGSS soundtrack is just how many extra layers of sounds they crammed into everything, which really weakens the main melodies and baselines. They feel weaker, less impactful, and a lot of them have very kiddy sounding xylophones.

Gen 2 has a somewhat moody sounding OST in the originals, but HGSS has this very disorganized lighthearted twist on it.
