I miss when there were fewer legendary Pokemon. If a region has like 10 different legendaries running around, they can't be all that legendary.

They weren't relevant at all. The tacked on suicune plot in crystal is also optional. Heartgold Soulsilver made them a major part of the plot, but as I said after gen 3 they went fucking retarded with the chosen one plots.

gen1 didn't really have much plot but even then, mewtwo was part of the environmental storytelling (pokemon mansion). They only later connected that to team rocket. Mew was a mememon added when they freed up some space.
The birds were just there
Lugia & Ho-Oh were once again more part of the environmental storytelling and capturing them more of a sidequest.
The dogs idk. Always kind of ignored them since I don't like dogs

The only time Mewtwo is even referenced in-game is in the Cinnabar Mansion diaries, which are completely optional to read

Base SV is an unfinished game like 99% of games that have DLC. In total SV has 6 in the base game, add in the 6 Paradox legendaries, then add in another 5 for the Kitakami legendaries. Then it's up to you whether you want to add one more for Bloodmoon Ursaluna considering it's basically identical to one. So that is 18 legendaries, a new record. Plus all of the returning ones in the DLC as well.
Even Diamond and Pearl only had like 9 legendaries and a couple of mythicals.

The legendary being plot relevant or an important npc isn't a problem. It's good to change the formula a little bit in a long serie, and you won't ever be able to replicate the mystery that surrounded gen 1 legends thanks to how internet evolved. You could do better with it than go "player is the chosen one" though. "One duo of legends + one trio + events godmon" should have never become a mandatory design choice for every gen past gen 2, or 3 if you want to push it.

Not even, they just randomly force you to go catch them after the 8th gym. It's not relevant to the plot of the games at all, and one of the worst decisions HGSS made.

Legendaries should never be required to be caught, IMO. Having some encounters as a part of the central plot isn't a terrible thing but if someone isn't interested in a pokemon they should be allowed to not collect it.

it used them well though.
you have your box trio, the lake trio that's involved in the plot, the big A, Regigigas linking to gen 3, Heatran's postgame quest
cresselia and darkrai don't really fit in but they're a nice duo. the only ones i'd say are bloat are manaphy/phione and shaymin.

The anime was originally meant to be canon (as seen by the fact that Pokemon Yellow exists) but it was changed because Masuda wanted to copy Digimon (you can't tell me Lucario isn't just Renamon)
