In the first case, she realized they weren't compatible and lacked any chemistry, and she didn't want to become his tard wrangler, and in the second case, even though Ash didn't say it with romantic implications (duh), Miette read them into him "choosing" Serena over her and bowed out. So I think she developed a fleeting half-crush that wasn't that deep and 90% of the time was busting Serena's balls to make her put up a fight, and in the end, shrugged it off when she knew she didn't have the compatibility. This all said, the clearer reading would be to just dismiss the magazine and assume it was 100% ball-busting.
