There's also speculation that Kitakami is in Johto or close to it, just as the blueberry academy is just off the shores of Unova, which adds an interesting question as to why two kids living in or close to Johto are going to a school in or close to Unova, and how it's seen as perfectly normal as if the regions are actually somewhat close together.
