It is funny. One of the best writers YuGiOh anime ever had (during the first 26 episode arc of 5Ds forgot his name) quit the show cuz he got offered to work on the Pokemon DP anime.

I always forget that 5D's was a late 00s anime. I always think that 5D's is early 10s and belongs to the BW era instead of the DPPt era despite me informing myself about the first 5D's when they were coming out of Japan.
Maybe it's just the style and aesthetics?
The GX style and aesthetics closer to DPPt than the 5d's style in my opinion.

Well you are correct, 5Ds went on until early 2011 and was the beginning of the futuristic style they adopted and made the norm then on. GX was the end of an era and went on until early 2008 so it would have seen DP at its midpoint.

I don't have the graphic on me but someone years ago demonstrated how Mega Rayquaza was Slifer, Zygarde-Complete was Obelisk, and Ultra-Necrozma was Ra.

I thought that was interesting even though I don't like the mons other than Mega Rayquaza.

The first Yu-Gi-Oh chapter to feature Duel Monsters came out before the Pokemon anime was even out, nor were the games out in Japan.
It was clearly a rip off of Magic the Gathering and there's no denying that Pokemon played a part in influencing the popularity of the card game which forced the author to pivot the series into being solely about it, but to say it was ripping off Pokemon specifically is disingenuous.

The games were sure but most of the supplemental material that made it a megahit wasn't, including the anime itself.
And again, it wasn't even out in the west at the time.

If it wasn't for Pokemon you wouldn't even have YuGiOh as an anime (franchise) as Pokemon created the children advertisement genre that dominated the late 90s up to the early 10s.

There were like 50 episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh out before the real life game became a thing, that's why they don't even follow the rules for the first season of the DM show.
It wasn't until GX that the franchise became TCG first and promotional anime second.

Are you forgetting season 0? Also the TCG had two different sets of rules. The very first one was from 1998 (which season 0 and the PSX game featured) where elemental advantages played a vast role instead of numbers.

No I'm not forgetting season 0, though I'd completely forgotten that Duelist Kingdom was 50 episodes rather than the standard 26
I think GX did 26 episode story arcs which is why I got it mixed up.
Also the TCG was never played with Season 0 or 1 rules, in fact the TCG launched around the time Battle City was starting in the manga, which is when they changed the ruleset of the series to actually be sensible.

it was, but it was Bandai that launched that game not Konami, they had the same artwork from the s0 too

Also the PSX Forbidden Memories game follows the rules of that game, I don't blame you for not knowing all of that tho
