First instance was ironically the name itself, which everyone thinks Digimon copied from Pokemon, when Pokemon didn't get that name until Pocket Monsters was localized due to Monster In My Pocket copyright issues. Digimon was already known as Dejimon in Japan, before Pocket Monsters got the name Pokemon.

The two names are extremely similar though. Imagine being little John America and you ask your parent for Pocket Monsters, but end up with little plastic werewolfs and such instead.
