Not really, Legends: Arceus took place in the Hisui region (of which Jubilife Village was the only meaningful hub) and the marketing was clear on that. This time, the game takes place entirely (entirely!) in Lumiose City.

GF has a poor track record of cities in the Switch era, with Mesagoza being a laggy, pointlessly large mess, all other Paldean cities consisting of a few buildings without interiors, Jubilife Village being a literal village, Motostoke and Hammerlocke being dissapointingly small and Wyndon being empty and having nothing to do. I can see them making a game centered around a single city and allocating all their resources to finally get it right. A game focussing on the geometry of a city might also prove to be more feasable after their experimentation with large open worlds, if only because culling and instancing works better in the confined spaces that a city setting would provide.

I'd like to imagine it'll be set in a 1870-1887 period where they're starting to build the tower and what effectively becomes modern Lumiose City, and the big issue is Zygarde doesn't like what the construction is doing to Kalos' ecosystem.

I wouldn't mind it taking place MOSTLY in the city, if the city was large and felt alive and fully realized. Run down parts of town could be where wild pokemon are found, and dealing with them could be a part of the game. I don't really think that's what's going to happen here though. My guess is it's going to have areas around the city to encounter wild pokemon. PLA wasn't perfect, but it understood that people want to throw pokeballs at pokemon in the overworld. Gamefreak removing that would be really stupid even for them.

That's because they were never expecting to make games for the Switch. They only did so because they make a bet that they would if Switch ended up being a success. And given how this is being released in 2025 aka the same year as Switch 2, they are most likely working as a Switch 2 game from the start.

Honestly this might be a good thing. Game Freak suck at world design, limiting it to a single city might mean that it's densely populated with actual content. Although I assume that means they're not going down the same "complete the Pokedex" route that they did with Legends Arceus, which again is a good thing since it means they're keeping things fresh rather than rehashing the same formula every release like they did with the mainline games.

I think in BW I was done with them. When I play the games now, I can't wait to get out of cities and go explore the wilderness. Pokemon exist in the wilderness, not in cities.

We already got two open world games focusing on large scale environments with Arceus and SV and even the SWSH DLC. It's obvious Legends is an experimental series to test out ideas. It seems Gamefreak is allocating an entire game to getting a big city right since they've been rather lackluster in 3D so far.

For those expecting a boring map remember with a city you can have verticality via buildings and skyscrapers as well as underground and sewer systems. I'm just curious about the Dex selection. Arceus had the entire gen 4 regional dex plus a few more but the Kalos dex is 400+. I wouldn't expect more than 250.

My guess is Digital World segments, given a part of the game's plot is developing a new city and we saw a virtual world simulation in the trailer. The MC is probably transported within the PC at certain points and as you progress in the real world, new portions are developed and real Pokemon (maybe even Pokemon released within the PC) are start appearing (maybe a code leak?) and you're allowed to explore different virtual biomes, similar to the Terarium in the Indigo Disk DLC.
It also lets them cover their ass when all the non-Lumiose sets are bare-bones and generic as shit, but that's okay because 'it's not the real locations! It's just a virtual simulation, so it's not as detailed!'

While possible, Arceus was released in January and it might be that Z-A follows suit as the last game on the Switch proper. If the Switch succesor is backwards compatible (which seems likely based on the current state of the industry) especially so. After all, USUM and B2W2 released on by then outdated hardware, presumably because of the larger install base. Then again, LGPE exist.

dude this just is proof of concept for a more fleshed out GTA like Pokemon where they can actually battle in close quarters like th alleys and stuff. No one said there wouldn't bea battle royale or battle tournament of some sort as Lumiose had the Gym but with a city design rework, that can include a lot of functionsa nd facets

Legends Arceus was a step in the right direction and now they're bringing megas back. This game is gonna be fucking LIT

All these years on the switch this is what they've been building up to. If they can switch seamlessly from overworld battles to turn based gym battle style, then we have a clear victor in the palworld vs pokemon

I want to see the history of each city and location, early versions as they build the cities up to what they are nowadays, and the prime of locations that are ruins in the newer games. Legends shafted me by having a village and what was basically two campsites, and now I won't even get to step outside of the one city with the second Legends game.
