Perhaps in order to not need Ash to win Sinnoh and continue from where we ended in DP Ash could have just changed as a character because of a timeskip - timeskips are lame, I know, but I feel like BW would have been better with one given that the protagonists were older than in previous games and the fact that Ash lost to a team full of legendaries would have definitely brought him down for a bit, with his opportunity to travel Unova being a chance at going back after spending a couple of years mostly training in Kanto.
Once he’s there, he’d meet Bianca and Cheren, who become the female companion and main rival, respectively, with Bianca having an arc closer to her game counterpart’s (but still keeping her energy, which parallels young Ash to some extent). Rocket vs Plasma arc might or might not happen, Cilan probably stays as the male companion.
