Either they oughta double down on the real-world influence hard (see Alola) or they oughta use it as a loose base and mostly make the region it's own thing.
However Unova is the start of a completely different problem in their region design, where they decide that they need an ice area, a ground area, an electric area, etc, which leaves the region feeling a touch inorganic. In Hoenn for example they tuck the ice types into the lowest levels of an ocean cave to not disturb the tropical theme, and Alola also gets away with this because of the archipelago setup, but then you look at Galar or Kalos which just have completely abrupt biome changes because they needed an area for a specific type. Unova sort of skirts around this by using a lot of caves and bridges to break the region up, but it still doesn't feel as realistic as prior regions.
