>>55526511I kind of love and hate some of the megas at the same time for this reason—pokemon often take inspiration from multiple things simultaneously, but the combination of Mystery Dungeon’s “They’re girls, you guys” approach for Team Charm plus these megas in particular kind of make them seem like they’re very specifically derived from just one fanservice-y idea.
Meditite to Medicham partly represents monks who perform both meditation and martial arts as spiritual exercises, heavily referenced by Meditite’s dex entry describing Meditite’s fasting practices; and neither of them have ever screamed “intended to be female” designs to me.
Lopunny has always been super feminine and partially inspired by playboy bunnies, but the other half of its inspiration is a Japanese fairytale about a child’s rabbit doll coming to life after taking good care of it—this is a large part of the idea behind Buneary only evolving with high friendship despite being one of the only prevos which isn’t presented as a babymon by giving you an egg early-game or something, as well as why Lopunny’s legs/hips/butt are shaped the way they are. It winds up looking like it has child-bearing hips, but a big part of the design is to still kind of look like a plush animal designed for sitting on display, but standing upright.
There’s nothing wrong with them being sexy, and I’m glad we have those concepts alongside all sorts of other aspects of life among various pokemons’ designs; I just feel like a tradeoff for these in particular is that people overlook any sense they may ever have once had regarding non-fanservice design inspiration, and see them only as that.
Mega Gardevoir is perfect and my only complaints are that Gamefreak hasn’t let us mega evolve her for 10 fucking years, and that she has the same model for her hips and ass under the ballroom-esque bustle as her regular form, instead of becoming dummy thicc
