When ORAS came out I started to doubt the remake system would keep working, given Unova games' oddities, and then when GF announced Pokemon Sun Moon in 2016, without ever completing XY with a Z version I knew for sure they had simply stopped the third version trend.
8 years later I think we can finally take it for granted, we don't need remakes, we don't need third versions. Expansion Pass and The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero replaced third versions. Teal Mask was our honorary "remember Johto?" experience. Indigo Disk was literally a return to Unova. Legends already give us new and interesting returns to Sinnoh and Kalos.
The old system is dead. And that's a good thing.
