They don't know what it is, but it was definitely not a local animal. From what I remember, the reports are too varied to come to a conclusion.

Man, can't believe I forgot about Le Bete.
I've been thinking a lot on the Rougarou, which also has French origin.
I'd still much rather see Mightyena get a standard cross-gen evolution, but I suppose a Mega fits the whole werewolf theme of either better.
Pretty sure its safe to rule out regional forms too considering the line was in X and Y.

Stripped hyena is a dumb theory. Striped hyenas are wusses and are on average, smaller than wolves. Seeing as how it had double dewclaws, it was almost certainly a wolf-Beauceron hybrid.

most widely accepted hypothesis is wolves, you know those large carnivarous creatures native to france
