I know why we didn't get a remake! Technically speaking only gen 1 and 2 deserved a remake to begin with, with Emerald, Platinum, and BW2 serving as a sort of pseudo remake of their own gen. The only games that were truly left unfinished were XY with no third game to fix them. The Hoenn and Sinnoh remakes were totally unnecessary and were based on the vanilla versions adding nothing but removing stuff. Honestly it was obvious XY were going to be next from the get go!
