It's the fact that there's usually only a small handful of fire types in a given region and you feel obligated to have a fire-grass-water core on your team.
If you don't have a fire mon then steel types can be really annoying to deal with.
And most of the designs are mediocre elemental animals.

No? There's barely any steel types you face, you can use fighting and ground types too, and most importantly the games are piss easy you don't need to hit for SE STAB against a mon that will waste a turn setting up something stupid like focus energy and then hit you with a 70bp move if GF is feeling like giving you a challenge

Especially now with the physical/special split. I could somewhat see this argument back in gens 2/3 because steels are usually tanky physically but now just use aura sphere/earth power

Yeah but even then - prominent Steel-type users in gen 2 and 3 are what? Jasmine who folds to any Water-type and Steven.
I'm not also saying that Fire-types are co,pletely useless, they cover a lot of stuff in just one Pokemon. It's just that they feel least irreplaceable - untill gen 7 you needed any Water-type to Surf anyway and there's a lot of utility moves that are nearly exclusive to grass-types. Meanwhile Fire can cover few types in one mon but that's it.

In Kanto you can be okay without Water-type. A lot of non-Water mons can use Surf.
Tho Kanto is also region that gives you five different Water-types as gifts, and with exception of Kabutops (who still is perfectly useable) all of them are kinda good.

All I really need is Surf, and if I'm going to not use a water type its easy to build around that in the first 6 gens. Gen 3 is the only real frustration
