Because Game Freak designed Johto to be KANTOOOOO's Doormat. Johto Pokemon arent supposed to be memorable or liked. they're purpose is to prop up the GenWun Pokemon. If you like a Johto starter TPC/ Game Freak hate you and want you to suffer.

Actually, the original Typhlosion is back to being better as of SV because it has Scorching Sands, whereas Hisuian Typhlosion literally only has Eruption and Infernal Parade.

None of the Pokemon with variants are popular enough to be shillmons. All the actual shillmons got mega evolutions. All a variant says is that they don't care about the original anymore. Alolan Ninetales exists so now regular Ninetales won't be promoted anymore.

Was relatively popular before Absol and then Lucario replaced it as the top dog

Zapdos is popular in competitive, but overall they're forgotten. Articuno and Moltres are both 4x weak to rock so most just meme on them.

Movie flopped and overall didn't live up to "new Lucario" expectations so they pretended Zoroark didn't exist in gen 6 onwards

I love Johto but the starters aren't that well designed.

Johto will always suffer from middle-child syndrome. It’s sandwiched between Kanto and Hoenn and HGSS is stuck between Platinum and BW.
