Gengar loved him and didn't think anything of being asked to wait for his trainer, so it stayed for a very long time. It began playing pranks on the people who purchased and set up a lab in the building it was asked to wait outside. Ash was helping out the reserchers there and offered to help Gengar find its owner. They ran into the guy who abandoned Gengar and he panicked, essentially blaming Gengar for everything wrong with his life and saying how he was better without it, while running away from the now angry Gengar. Ash calmed it down and convinced it to join him.
