What ROM Hack should I play if I
>don't want to see gimmicks like megas/dynamax/z-moves/terrastalize
>don't want convoluted anime caliber writing
>don't want regional variant fakemon
>don't want new mechanics like new types or battle gimmicks
>just want a new adventure that feels like it's from GBA/DS Generation Pokemon, possibly with (GOOD) fakemon, and good region design.

Not GBA/DS but I highly recommend Crystal Clear, it's amazing, if you don't like gen 2 it'll make you like it

With that much restrictions you're blocking yourself from a lot of truly great romhacks. But I guess I would recommend pokemon stranded and fire red rocket edition

i don't pay attention to hacks but its interesting that even though there are dozens of hacks out there the only one I've heard brought up is Pokemon Uranium. Is it just that good?

i just don't care for a hack that wants to use modern tropes like megas or regional variants. It feels kinda cheap to me, but hey if you think it's worth looking at those kinds of things then I guess I'd be open to it.

from what I can tell these are just the existing games but tweaked to be for more seasoned players right? sounds interesting but not really what im looking for. Unbound looks more my speed but I'd be curious to know a bit more about it.

Good description of Drayano hacks yeah. Recently I've been playing a lot of Altered Platinum (fan modded Renegade Platinum) that has a few dozen Sinnohan forms and custom shinies that are all really great, but still standard Sinnoh.

Unbound is my favourite romhack ever, this link will summarize it for you better than I could

I've heard really good things about Gaia so I'd check that out too.

If you're fine with gen 2, Prism is quite an og and very expansive hack with original regions as well, it does have a few new typings though.

If you're cool with rpgmaker games I'd also recommend Insurgence. Been around for quite a while now, there's a ton of really cool deltas to check out as well

Just go for fools gold or quarantine crystal. Both keep Johto mostly the same, while giving it some new zones here and there so its still familliar yet different. The dexes for both are entirely unique, fools gold has a spin on gens 1-3 mons in ways that go beyond just regional forms. Some are comical, others are really clever and it does really recapture the feeling of playing through a mons game for the first time again. QC is a bit more different, has an entirely original dex with the highest quality of mons I’ve ever seen, with everything both being based on something in real life and incorporated as a creature in a creative way Its not really finished (only goes up to gym 4 in kanto) but johto feels like a complete enough experience to recommend.

And if you don’t like gbc hacks then you’re out if luck from me since they’re my fave

Only one warning: the game will shit on you, hard. Both in gimmicks and setting.

Well if you really want something that feels like a GBA game, Pokémon Gaia is like that. That game does have mega evolutions, but it is about the same difficulty as the early mainline games, so you definitely don’t need to use them.
