GS' latter 8 badges are postgame content, and almost every single game has the champion as someone who you meet several times across the main story. Not really a twist anymore when it's always someone with a unique design to every other character, with strong Pokemon.

This is mostly shitposting but there is some merit to it, Hoenn takes a lot from Kanto where Johto didn't and other games would follow suit basically cementing a lot of it as "the Pokemon formula", but when it was only Kanto, Johto and Hoenn, Kanto and Hoenn had a lot more in common with each other than they did with Johto.
>you skip the first gym you find
>you go straight through a forest right after
>first gym you can actually do uses rock
>small cave as the second dungeon around the same time you do the second gym
>fourth major city you visit is a port
>game corner is a thing
>cycling road is a thing
>third gym is electric
>there's a small cave path that loops you back to the start of the game from a mid game town
>first major encounter with the villain team happens before the fourth gym
>you get to choose one of two fossils to revive into a new pokemon
>the gym you skip at the start of the game is a leader with more story significance than the others
>there's an optional power plant dungeon that you need surf in an early game area to access
>villain team takes over a big science building where you have to fight them off before you can do the sixth gym
>late game areas are blocked by a Pokemon in the overworld that you need an item to fight and get off the path
>there's a pokemon cemetery tower that the evil team attacks
>there's a safari zone
>the last chunk of areas in the game is accessed via water routes
>there's an optional ice cave where you can catch an ice seal pokemon
>three legendaries in stationary locations with specific elemental themeing that informs their entire design

To be honest this actually makes some sense and Hoenn actually had a pretty good idea with making the second water route encounter water/flying.
Think about it - Tentacool and Wingull are the only two water Pokemon that don't make it so the grass starter has a way easier time in that section of the game than the other two.

Dude, there's nothing wrong with loving a game that was hated at launch. Be grateful it gained a cult following, and even if it didn't, you should still enjoy it, if you manage to get past the numerous issues that drove all the people away.
As an example, I will die on the hill that Quest 64 is a good game. I acknowledge everyone hates it, and I know why. That game hasn't been so lucky to garner a cult following, but I still enjoy it regardless.

It says a lot about Game Freak's thoughts on Gen 2 when they specifically point out that the MC, and ultimately the player are moving out of Johto. It's a not-so-subtle way of them admitting their dissatisfaction with GSC, and saying that it's time for everyone, especially themselves, to move past the old and to go to embark on greater horizons.

Don't forget it also follows the same basic beginning sequence: You start out from a tiny town containing two houses and the professor's lab, go north to the next town, fetch a parcel to bring back to the professor who gives you a Pokedex and the ability to catch Pokemon. You then go a bit further and get a catching tutorial. You pass a later gym that you can't challenge yet. Then there's a forest with bugs. Then just after you come out the other end of the forest you reach the town that has the first gym (as well as where you later return to resurrect fossils). Then after getting your first badge you go through or into and back out of a cave.
