the chain was a produced product, but Dialga & Palkia & Giratina had their own special orbs and Arceus got slabs for every type.

Fair enough, although I wouldn't say that these items were integral to the game itself (despite being required to summon the legendary). Starting with gen 6, however, "magic rocks" become an integral part of the game/plot.

JRPG writers have an incredibly, monumentally strong fixation on the idea of crystals being magical.

You could probably make a drinking game out of it or something, "take a shot any time the characters mention a magic crystal or rock." Pokemon isn't that bad but most Final Fantasy games would kill you.
