Good point. I wish it was a past setting but it seems clear from how the city looked in the trailer and the story in XY that it's modern or future.

Answer me this and I'll concurr: if it's set in the present or future, why would it start with an old film reel? Specifically one that looks like an old French worker's film? Why would they deliberately start the trailer like that?

And that's it. The rival gets a Mega Ring from Gurrkin by the postgame, letting them use Mega Evolution too, but that's still all the mega trainers in the game. Not even at the Battle Maison are megas used. Contrast that with both the Battle Tree in SM, where NPC trainers will use megas, and ORAS, where mega trainers are much more common.

It's text on a paper BEING filmed by probably an old 16mm camera, which wasn't an uncommon practice in Paris in the first half of the 20th century, since it was the city with the most access to cameras besides LA at the time

Wow it's almost like Pokemon it's a badly written piece of shit that keeps getting retconned and retconned with each new game and full of "don't think too hard about it just consoom".
Did you already forget Megas got retconned into being akchually a meme meteor that Rayquaza ate an then shat ont?
And then the next game wanted to make you think Megas were actually evil and put Pokemon through pain and basically tortured them?
But hey now Mega is good again it's coming back after ten years despite them trying their hardest to throw it into the trash to sell you meme dances back then.

I think they mean that the power of Megas has only recently been understood and dominated enough to create devices like the Mega Ring and control the phenomenon in battles safely enough to give it to some teenagers.
Mega stones themselves, and the effect they have on certain Pokemon are much older.
Maybe not THAT old, but definitely a few generations older than the XY protagonists and Sycamore at the very least.

This was retconned immediately. In XY it’s stated that it’s a new phenomenon and only exists in Kalos, but ORAS takes place prior to XY and megas are common and well-understood there.

Megas and Fairy lore in XY was like eggs and Dark/Steel lore in GSC- something for the benefit of returning players exclusively.

I'm excited for Legends Z-A because it's clear that they want megas to have an origin, it's just that they haven't decided conclusively on what that is.

Also let's say Sycamore is correct in his theory. That means that the mega stones have another potential if Zygarde powers the ultimate weapon, which is clearly what the A represents in the title, and if it AZ - the one who fired it.
