What's the difference between convergent evolutions and regional forms?

Alolan Vulpix is still a Vulpix and occupies the same Dex slot

Regional forms are variants that are specific to one region. Either because the mon changed when it came to a region(like the bulk of them) the mon changed elsewhere(Zigzagoon/Exegguttor) and a few ambiguous cases(like the birds).

"Convergent Evolution" is not an official term and is for completely unrelated mons that developed similar characteristics but are entirely unrelated. They're just more similar than, say Tauros and Bouffalant.

An Alolan Diglett is a Diglett that, due to the soil in Alola, became part Steel.
A Wiglett isn't even close to related to Diglett and will have more close ancestry with shit like Goldeen and Toxapex. However it ended up looking a lot like Diglett as they both burrow.

Of course that doesn't explain why the immediately fucked that up with Polchaigeist being a convergent when all the logic in the world would suggest the two Tea Ghost Pokémon would be closely related but hey.

Regional forms are the same pokemon adapting to another environment
Convergent evolutions are completely different pokemon, which have evolved in a similar way

For example Diglett is a mole, Wigglet is a barnacle
Tentacool is a squid, Toedscool is a mushroom

True but we've never dropped bellow 80. And I'll be honest. With how many dogshit designs made it into unova I can't exactly say I'm keen on quantity over quality. I dont really feel like I need over 100 brand new pokemon each game anymore. It's not like not having a regional form with an amazing beloved pokemon design. Most likely scenario is that they just won't put any pokemon in that space and worst case scenario they put in a shitmon or a pokemon that's 200% forgettable. You're not being denied content. That content never existed and probably never would have.

Gen 5 had both, but Genwunners were salty because Unova's dex was designed to be more iconic and impactful than KANTOOOOOO's instead of a tiny expansion pack that only exists to to be KANTOOOOOOOOs leftovers like Johto's. Genwunners threw a tantrum and normies being the absolute brainlets they are fell for it and shat all over Masusda's Magnum Opus so Game Freak stopped trying.

It's not but I think that goes both ways. I don't think regional forms are taking away from original pokemon. I think they're burnt out on ideas and they've been rushing each new generation more and more so it's easier to fall back on regional forms to pad out the roster. Theyre a symptom not the cause.

Did you not learn basic biology in school? A regional form is a species that has evolved over time into different variants/branches, like the finches found in Galapagos islands. A convergent evolution are two different species taking very similar evolutionary paths, like sharks and rays.

Better example: sharks and dolphins.
Both have long, finned, hydrodynamic bodies.
However, while the evolutionary history of shark was pretty much "yup, still making sharks, sharks work", the ancestor history of dolphins had a stopover on land being four-legged land animals before they went back into the water and eventually developed into the "this is good for swimming" body shape that sharks also developed into, just way earlier.

Convergent evolution happens when evolutionary pressures cause traits that appear physically similar to an existing species despite having no relation.
