In the first 5 gens, the regions aren't really "based off" anything in particular. I'm sure they take some inspirations from real-life/historical Japan/Russia/America, but they are ultimately fantasy worlds. Human imagination cannot create something out of nothing, every design has to be inspired from "something". But it isn't until gen 6+ that the regions become "literally X country lmao".

I remember a schizo that got really mad at me for saying that Unova is based on New York. He insisted that it was Hong Kong and sperged out for a whole thread over it. The funny thing was that this was only a few years ago. If this was back when Black and White were first revealed then he might have been justified since that was a common theory for a time. Instead he was making a scene years after the games released and it was basic common knowledge that it was very blatantly New York, and explicitly stated as such by Masuda. Along with having nothing to tie it with HK at all. Strange guy.

I don't see it. Not only is there a way more obvious Manhattan shape, obvious landmarks like Dumbo, Unity Tower, and Skyarrow Bridge, and Mistralton being Teterboro Airport, but it literally recreates Central Park and Times Square.
