PMD is loved because it wrote stories starring the Pokemon, which GameFreak directors won't ever do because they only take humans seriously. It's not about the gameplay, and it's not about the stories in and of themselves. If the game starred non-pokemon creatures and wasn't related to the Pokemon brand, it would be far less well known.

Gameplay is fine, like I said the dungeons are personalized, or at least randomly generated to some degree, you and your teammates cover eachothers weaknesses and climb/descend while managing your resources.
