I was pissed off when I found out it removed day/night cycle and handdrawn multiple frame animations for every monster. it has a lot of cool shit I am glad I got to experience cause emerald was my first real pokemon game but it was a downgrade in ways. also yeah some rushed wonky art here and there.

Gen 3 undid much of what made GS a fun sequel. It was not a continuation but a “reboot” with new Region, Gym Leaders and bad guys. Mechanics like day/night events or calling trainers were gone. You only had one Regional map instead of several. Backwards compatibility was impossible, go buy Colosseum if you want old mons. Colosseum itself was panned for lacking mini games, rentals or the other modes from Stadium. Make no mistake, Gen 3 was the black sheep of Pokémon for years.

Of course it’s been 20 years so most people have either long moved on or started playing during RSE and found the good in it.

Yes the battle frontier matters and also all the stuff Emerald fixed such as the font, gym leader teams, bag space, pc boxes, much more pokemon being available in the post game (granted that’s also because it came out later), such as Ditto which to this day is present in every single pokemon game except RS. Also battle entry animations which Crystal had and RS removed. And a better level curve too.
Emerald is the third version that improved the most onto the originals.

It wasn't a big enough step up, it was an aesthetic step down from gen 2, it didn't have day/night cycles, it didn't have multiple regions, it cut the Pokedex in half and forced you to buy more spinoffs to recatch your bromons, and it introduced the stupid "chosen one" plotline where you have to save the world from apocalyptic bullshit. Gen 2 was the last good gen.

It was a step down in term of features, sure: day and night, phones, radio, entry animations, the time machine and previous region may have been necessary omissions to launch the game on time or to have the games running on new hardware. But back then I expected the games to keep adding things on top, because that's what GS did.

That is true, but the problem still remains and if you want those pokemon, you have to pay a hefty sum or get lucky if you want to do it legit when buying a cart for hopes of them having the events. Even back then you'd be paying a lot of money, since it spans two consoles and multiple games.

I honestly don't mind all the bad parts since it brought enough to the table to compensate with things like secret bases, contests, and battle frontier.
I did miss the day/night cycle a lot, and I don't care for the "it wouldn't mix well with the rain/drought cycles" argument, its just a fucking color filter on the overworld, it would absolutely work.
