Hop and Hau were them exploring the fact that (you) are an unstoppable prodigy and how that much actually impact your rival. For the most part it's a neat idea, but ultimately they're pretty simple "inferiority complex" takes. I do think Hop was the more interesting of the two, but like almost everything in SwSh's story, was undercooked.
Personally I kind of like what they went with in SV where you being a prodigy is recognised but is actually really good for everyone around you because you're either the only one who can keep up with them (Nemona) or you help them in a way no one else could (Arven and Penny). Kieran also takes the Hop/Hau inferiority complex angle and plays it differently too which is nice.
