I don't see those three as rivals though, they don't compete with you in any meaningful way and you don't better each other. They're just friends. Friend characters who are just friend characters but there are three of the mofos and all superfluous. You also battle them and they get all sad because you kick their asses, but I don't feel bad because they're not trying to be good at battling and thus don't deserve sympathy. It's just extra EXP for me. Actually be a decent character.
