Megas like Mawile, Sceptile, and even Lopunny are the exception-they took the base mons and expanded their existing designs with new traits that furthered the theme or added a new theme that was related to the old one (yes, Lopunny gaining "seductive" ripped pantyhose and vest patterns did play into it's possible inspiration of the playboy bunny, as weird as it is).
But for each of them, there was a Mega Garchomp, or Beedrill, or Pidgeot, or Charizard, or Altaria. Designs that, while not necessary BAD
aside from Mega Garchomp, fuck that thing is gaudy they don't aim to do more but make cooler, more powerful looking versions of the mon they spring from, which is just a far less interesting approach to take with new designs over Regional Variants in a setting where the time-removed culture and landscape are part of the appeal.
