I definitively DON'T like that in Pokemon, usually they aren't done well
With that said, I'll basically repost what I said elsewhere
It feels to me that we are in one of two scenarios:

They've already swapped from consistent Storyriders/Matsuzawa episodes to the old PM19 pacing (one rushed plot episode every two months), complete with PM19 and guest writers. We will see a marked shift in dialogue as well as the direction of the story going forward, likely to more lighthearted things even with regards to the main plot. Basically, the doomer scenario. The "consistent" pacing of season 1 has been deemed a failure by everyone involved.
The second (and better) scenario:
>In order to do the tie-in with Terapagos and the DLC release in a way that made sense (bonding with 3 of the six heroes in order to unleash its power), Sato had to accelerate the story far further than he would have liked. There isn't really any room to have more Explorers battles constantly like during the first season, as we've already met them all. As such, he attempted to use PM19 pacing to see how far he could stretch out the main storyline. However, he (and the directors I assume) weren't satisfied with the results. The main trio are very behind with regards to the development of their teams, in no small part due to the presence of the RVTs solving many of the conflicts for them. As such, they devised a training arc in order to get away from the RVTs and blitz through team development milestones.
This is also bad
It's essentially a rejection of the show's premise, or an admission that it doesn't work as well as they thought it would
Both the consistent pacing and now the primary setting, cast, and structure have now been dropped or altered

As such, maybe I'm being a bit premature with my conclusions, and this is all just a bunch of schizobabble
I AM excited for the new arc, of course, as I really loved SV's story
But I'm also rather sad that they couldn't make PM23's premise work, especially after the incredibly strong start the series had, and am expecting either a series composition or directorial change going into the new arc
Changes this drastic don't happen out of nowhere

Assuming they're not just spending, like, three episodes at the school and that this is going to be a full arc, I'm amazed. A Pokémon series has never shifted gears on this level before. I personally have been very displeased with Horizons' treatment of its main characters, as well as the bloat of too many characters and too many villains (who have all been defeated before getting to do anything cool).

Maybe they feel the same behind the scenes and wanted to give Liko, Roy, and Dot a bunch of episodes to do normal Pokémon trainer shit. I might be back into this show now.

I was open to Horizons formula, and was super happy to see Ash replaced, but frankly the show has sucked for half of its runtime. Roy hasn't done fucking anything in a year, Liko's goal wound up being super nebulous and not entertaining for television (understanding Pokémon feelings). Their hesitation to make Liko anything besides cute, polite, and pleasant is disturbing, she lacks the ambition of a good protagonist.

I'm hoping the school arc puts Liko up against some new rivals and gives her more of a backbone

You're well aware that changes like this are made before the episodes come out, yes?
My point is that they drafted the scripts for "season 2" well in advance of their airing, but they weren't satisfied with the end result as the episodes came out
I have it on relatively good authority (by way of the animator tu yong ce) that episodes for PM23 are being produced from the start of animation to airing in the ballpark of 3 months, at least during the period of late 2023 when the new OP came out that he worked on
This means that, given a grace period of an extra month just in case, they have a pivot period of roughly 4 months if things aren't going well
My first scenario is based primarily on things we already know; namely that Storyriders HAS mostly fucked off already, with the swap to PM19 pacing
This complete departure from the story they were constructing is a big deal; perhaps they saw how the screenplays for season 2 were turning out from batch to batch, and weren't happy/interested
Considering that we ARE approaching the one year mark, maybe they decided to just leave
The issue with my theory is fundamentally that we don't know WHY they stepped back to begin with, and if I'm actually onto something or just talking out of my ass
Sure, a few buffer episodes here and there as was the case in Season 1 is fine, but they're pretty much gone ALREADY
And we'll never really know, aside from it probably being a directorial decision
I don't think Sato himself would decide to take his guys off the show unless things were really bad
As you said, though, and as I posted here >>55590892 prior to your spergout, it's entirely possible that Storyriders is doing the new arc, and that this was all part of the plan all along
If that's the case, though, then that isn't necessarily good either; it means that they crashed the pacing of the show in order to match the DLC release, which sucks and was poor decision making

So let's use the Kabu battle as a example.

The battle starts with Roy and Liko getting the shit kicked into them because they're fighting a capable trainer.

After Roy motivates fuecoco it gets into a clash with said gym leader and loses.

Kabu then flips off his gym trainer 'in training ' and tells her to take it from here.

If liko actually had to fight kabu like Roy did she would've lost just as bad because of type disadvantage. And or being overwhelmed.

Then in her actual real battle she starts to gain a upper hand but the rockerollee is fine

The thing casually gets back up before she forfeits.

This isn't talent. Sprigatito isn't talented liko could've won thar fight maybe but the way the battle ends is with both pokemon getting blue balled.

The gym girl gave her shonen speech about how she can't allow herself to lose since this is her gym trainer test, and Liko immediately lost all her motivation to continue despite landing a clean hit. Immediately after she runs off, Kabu calls out Liko for throwing her match against Roy earlier as well, saying she wants to respect her opponent's feelings more than she wants to win.

Easily the best written of the protagonists. Ash, Dawn, Liko and Roy don't have any central character flaws that are repeatedly brought up and used in the same way that Goh does. Hell, Goh is the only protagonist in Pokémon with a backstory that factors into his development. It ain't Shakespeare but it stands tall next to the others

Looking back on it Journeys really did play with typical episode structure a surprising amount, given it also introduced a Western-Cartoon style two-segment episode and also had the first main anime episode (as in, not a special or spinoff) to completely lack Ash. While not all of the experiments panned out-I maintain that the two-parter segment with those Marshtomp stuck in the ground was both incredibly boring and horrifically unfunny-I commend it for trying. Maybe they were attempting to introduce new avenues that future seasons could go down to keep things fresh before ultimately deciding that this would be Ash's last season and pivoting to a new direction entirely.

The eating champion Blaziken being unable to eat the Torchic cookies is one of the few times I've belly laughed at a non-4kids episode of Pokemon. Skwovet evolving into Greedent to beat Morpeko was kino as well. Journeys was firing on all cylinders when it came to one-off episodes

Can't really be confused about it. Most of the bulk is in the endgame arc from Rose, which got rushed ahead before the 60th episode mark without even the buildup. Them skipping over Bede for rushing Rose's plot and Hop until he shows up for support also takes away a big chunk. Marnie is a nothingburger so no losses. And the Postgame stopped getting touched on since SM.

Horizons seems to have a fetish for depriving Liko and Roy from experiencing a single fucking cathartic moment OR defeat for the entire series. Episode would have been 10 time better if the Explorers defeated Liko and Roy, giving them the kick in the ass they need to prepare for the rematch next week. I'm fucking tired of waiting for something to happen to these characters.

Is this a narrative driven series or a slice of life? It made a huge fucking bid for itself as the former, but the way the main characters NEVER seem to go through any meaningful challenge or change makes it feel more like a slice of life but without any form of comedy. I'm repulsed at this point.

Yeah, I think this battle not ending was a bit weird. I don't think they should've won, but at the very least keeping them on the ropes before the Explorers had to dip, thus making the two realize they 100% would've lost if they hadn't would've been better.
That said, given we're getting an arc that puts a focus on them training right after this one ends and they're actually confronting Rayquaza without being cucked out of a direct fight like the last two instances, I'm thinking that might be what they save to be the "inciting" loss that drives them to improve.

Not that anon you're arguing with, but while I don't think there's going to be some massive self reflection, getting Tera Orbs and learning how to use Terastallization is a pretty clear jump in power for the trio (given they don't fast-track development, but they haven't at any point thus far). Whether the Tera training consists of just battling around to get used to it or them partaking in Paldea's Treasure Hunt or even just studying at the Academy, growth of either strength, mentality, or both is a pretty sure deal.
Also, I 100% get the growth complaints the series has had so far given their development is a fair bit slower than Ash's in any given season prior, but I think acting like they haven't significantly grown at all over the course of the show is facetious at best and bitchy, disingenuous doomfagging at worst.

??? In what way? The “development” they’ve experienced is as barebones as you could possibly imagine. Learning new moves doesn’t change the fact that they still spam them with no real nuisance, they barely ever use unique strategies to tackle their foes, and there’s no real way to describe how different they are compared to when they first started. The only characters in this show that have received significant development since the show started and you can actually see their growth as clear as day are Dot and Amethio.

I think they would call this studying to learn Tera instead of training, so using your words of "You can’t use speculation as a defense" I am gonna fall back on the summaries and their coherency of when the word training got used in a promo or preview. They used the term "training" in the summary of the 7th episode with Cap, 17th episode summaries with Roy and his Wattrel Dilemma and the 20th episode for Kabu. Not ONCE was an episode, which had training in the title or in their summary, had an episode go without the Pokemon battling to train, so unless they do a complete left-field move to throw a discrepancy with the usage in april, it's not "speculation". The only speculation part I'll concede to is the motivation or the motive behind them joining the academy, but I am using consistency of previous summaries to back up the training episodes and them not being "speculation" as you say.

We literally just saw Liko have Sprigatito turn it's size disadvantage into a strength (something it learned earlier in the series) and Roy made use of normally disadvantageous terrain conditions after noticing a unique interaction borne of Fuecoco's easily frustrated nature (something that was also established early on and then reinforced with how Wattrel pushes it's buttons). There are both 100% thing they would NOT have done when they just started the series.
They've also grown pretty significantly in terms of character. Roy made a pretty hard pivot after seeing how hard Rayquaza btfo Amethio and he's been pretty consistenly shown training after acknowledging that just throwing himself at it over and over won't get him any closer to beating it. Liko started out over concerned, cautious, and oblivious of mons' feelings and all of that has changed as show progressed, as shown in several instances (most prominently being her relating to and understanding Hattrem being the main reason for it's capture).

Yeah, and that didn't really pan out or bear any fruit until the episode where Sprig got upset at her throwing the match against the gym trainer girl and again just recently in the episode where it walked out on her due to perceived neglect. I don't know if you know this, but development like that isn't a straight line upwards-there are hiccups and bumps along the way, even if progress is being made. Her making an effort early on isn't an indicator that she just suddenly "got it", and the fact that you think it is says a whole lot more about you than it does the show

In Last week's episode she noticed there was a dilemma with the Snap Boys filming Palafin and then promptly formulated a plan to use Magical Leaf to shroud it's vision and give it the opportunity.
