>>55594224Gen 1+2: Small beginnings. Tajiri is in charge and lays the groundwork for the series, they’re titles loosely based on his own Japanese childhood collecting insects. Pokémon wasn’t initially planned to go past this point. Relatively small scope that in part contributes to its fans viewing this era as comfy
Gen 3-5: Tajiri is no longer actively developing the games and Masuda takes over. Somewhat of a reboot, the games cannot connect to previous gens but that doesn’t matter since Gen 1 and 2 would be reimagined during this era. Shift in focus to apocalyptic plots oriented around the evil team using box legendaries for their own nefarious purpose. Legendaries in general are much more important and there are lots of them. More focus than ever placed on expanding competitive mechanics. Competitive fans tend to look wistfully back on this era
Gen 6-Present: Modern era. Possible reaction to critics who have been complaining about Pokémon games getting stale. Focus on gameplay gimmicks that stick around only on a per-gen basis. Shift to open-world gameplay. Dexcut. A generally tumultuous era trying to appeal to a new audience
