Since these doujins don't look cheap, I wonder if doujin artists tend to operate at a loss or something, unless they already know their work will be in high demand. They'll probably have to pay for the printing out of their pocket and who knows if they earn enough to recoup?
An independent writer I follow always says he operates at a loss and his are just novels...
