I might not have been happy if they had done that retroactively and never made SWSH etc. I always wanted the series to evolve back then. But, seeing their attempts at modernizing Pokemon, I would be happy if they decided now to pivot and make retro inspired games, yeah. Now that I can see I'm not missing out on anything better.

HGSS are the best games, so sure. Things can change and evolve, but there's a core that shouldn't be altered. It's like how doing DLC instead of third versions was a terrible decision because the third versions tended to fix a lot of problems with the original versions.
You might ask "Why don't you just want them to include these things the first time round?", but that's never going to happen. It's like how theoretically there's probably a way to get party-wide EXP to work, but it's never going to happen.

Prior to Gen 5, he is available ONLY in RBY and their remakes, with the only other exception being the POSTGAME in HGSS (literally after you beat Red, the final boss, I.E. when the game is completely finished).

He IS NOT AVAILABLE in GSC, RSE, DPPt (aka the main fucking Gen 2, 3 and 4 games).

Stop fucking pretending that Charizard was super freely available until Gen 5 when he fucking well wasn't and you damn well know it. Fuck.

Even Pikachu wasn't available until super late postgame in GSC and HGSS, so you can't use him as your scapegoat either. Fuck off.

Stop trying to handwave away any criticism of Gen 5. If the other Gens aren't immune to criticism, then neither is Unova.

The main benefit of 3rd versions is to allow for refinement of aspects of a game's core narrative and structure which can't generally be done by just patching the game because Pokemon is not a franchise that utilizes NG+. The best example of this is Emerald's drastically improved plot over either Ruby or Sapphire, which allowed for both villainous teams to behave more logically with the player being a universal opposing force instead of a soft ally to one team or the other.

The issue with the Gen 8 and Gen 9 DLCs is due to their very nature they aren't able to really meld seamlessly into the plots of the games they're additions to, and, due to this, generally do not impact in any meaningful way the potential problems that may exist in those original titles. No amount of Sword and Shield DLC can resolve the absolute shitfest that was the Macro Cosmos villain plotline.

When I think about the end of the 3rd version, I think that a lot of it is probably more of a corporate thing than a design thing, though. It's firstly more profitable to just sell DLC to an existing userbase but in addition to that, attempts to "clean up" the plots of the games will inevitably lead to desynchronization between the various parallel titles like Pokemon Masters, Unite and so on if things are being retconned left and right by inexplicable multiverse antics again and again. I agree. No amount of Platinum or BW2 DLC could resolve the absolute shitfest that was the Team Galaxy or Team Plasma plotlines from Platinum and BW2 so im still waiting for third version for them. It would surely fix everything.

Yeah. I think the open zone concept is a better baseline to start from but the open zones need to actually have more cohesive localized landmarking and be more generally distinct internally. I think the like, visual design of a lot of the environments is really dragging things down because the colors are so often muted so things all kind of blend together. If you look at the concept art of Paldea you can pretty clearly see there was a sort of baseline for this but the execution was the failure instead of the idea. Pokemon distribution also had too much overlap.

I like tall grass encounters but it should be contextual. Ie, if I walk through grass I might be attacked by a small pokemon. It would be a good way to make some dungeon harder, like you walk through a plain and you might be attacked by a feral flying pokemon.

Yeah the dex is good but half of it is only available fully-evolved very late in the game, if not after the game is beaten. Most of the hits are in the Chandelure half, only catchable and or usable near the end. For the first 3/4ths of the game you are stuck with shit like Watchog. Why do even most of the simple two-stagers like Galvantula and Scrafty take at least 35+ levels to evolve?
