you see the same thing with sabrina's venomoth, and with the 99% likely butterfree/venomoth swap, implies that butterfree was originally going to be a psychic pokemon. bug/psychic even explains the design direction for the mon, with the massive eyes, the flying posture that looks more like its floating, etc. venonat and butterfree even had the same poses all the way up to gen 4, almost like an artist was referencing/bemoaning the swap.
