I think the confidence thing is the same for Gio, but with a heavy hint of the bad boy mentality. Many many threads ago I saw someone posting about an unwritten fic idea about Gio disguising himself as a trainer to infiltrate Misty's gym, but winds up falling in love with her and I love the idea so much I may write it myself, if it doesn't already exist. I've thought a lot about it... maybe he's looking to take over the power plant in Cerulean and that's his motivation, but he meets her and it challenges everything he's ever understood about himself. Maybe the power plant is wrecking the water/water types that live nearby and that upsets her.
