There are shiny gens in Gen 2 due to it being DV (but it's the same as IVs) based, so a shiny parent increases the chance of the child being a shiny Pokemon to 1/64. Of course, you're going to want your shiny to be male because if it's female then you can't use it to breed different Pokemon. So a male shiny Gyarados would be very useful. Even more so if you transfer Shiny Gyarados to Gen 1 to use the mimic glitch that gives you a shiny Ditto. Alternatively, you can use a shiny Clefairy from the odd egg to turn a Ditto shiny but it's harder to pull off. Especially with the risk of bungling odd egg duplication by saving too late, and that you're essentially waiting for the Ditto that transformed into Clefairy to use Metronome so it has a small chance of using transform. This copies over the shiny DVs to the Ditto, so if you catch it, it becomes shiny.
