Among fans of the Pokémon anime in its entirety, what’s their opinion of Kanto? Do they, like casual fans, consider it the best part of the series, or do they prefer later seasons?

The general opinion tends to be that it's at least memorable, if not necessarily up to par with later series in certain aspects (battles and Pokemon characterization being the two main things later series did much better). But it was early and experimental, it's hard to criticize it too much through comparison with later stuff.

Like, the Brock episode you're posting screenshots of is a classic, and while the battles in it are obviously terrible if you compare them to anything later series would do, it's not really trying to be that kind of battle or the kind of episode that contains a well written battle sequence either, so it's kinda insincere criticism.

Fans of the entirety of the anime seem to prefer XY or Diamond and Pearl. Biggest reason being Pokemon battles got better.
I personally prefer Kanto over the other two because the writing doesn’t feel as restrictive as the later seasons, the group dynamic is fun, TR don’t feel like they detract from a lot of episodes like they do later, Pikachu and Ash actually have personality and growth.

Not just that, there's also the story having much better direction, the Pokemon having more defined personalities, and the individual human characters having well defined roles. It was the Pokemon formula at its best.

I said the biggest reason, not the only reason. Honestly Kanto did fine with the personality of the Pokemon. It’s just that some of them were more neglected like most of Misty’s Pokemon, all of Brock’s. I’d say Pidgeotto is the only case where I see it as an issue since it’s always on Ash’s team and its introduction was overshadowed by Caterpie.

Squirtle, Mr Mime, Jigglypuff, and Bulbasaur were definitely not battlebots. Later series definitely gave personality to more of the group’s Pokemon though thanks to them not catching and rotating as many as Kanto did.

Art style too. Something about that cel animation of the original series just looks better than later seasons like DP, BW, and Journeys.
Ash, Ash's Pikachu, and Team Rocket were certainly made for Gen 1. After that, I thought they long overstayed their welcome. There were a few moments with them that were good in those later series, but not enough to keep them as a whole.

This was certainly true during Pokémania when television had the biggest reach in terms of mediums. Normies, Genwunners, and the like still refer to it when it comes to Pokémon at a surface level to this day.
Does anyone know how much of an influence later seasons were for the franchise and fanbase?

Ash isn't some nice guy prodigy trainer. He's a little shit who objectively sucks at pokemon battling. He's rude and brash and spends the whole season basically failing upwards.
Pikachu isn't a loyal and cute best friend. He's constantly not listening, refusing to battle, and electrocution Ash.
Misty isnt a cute and polite heroine, she's a fiery redhead that's traveling with ash moreso out of spite than friendship.
Brock is the most normal guy there and he falls head over heels with any semi attractive woman he lays his squinty eyes on.
The OS crew kinda sucks and that's what makes them so memorable. They really feel like a bunch of kids just wandering from town to town doing their best. Later crews just don't give you that feeling. The characters feel a lot more idealized. Dawn and iris are meant to be kinda bratty and bullheaded but they don't capture the same feeling 5he original cast does.

The biggest impact later seasons had would be Ash-Greninja. Deoxys and Rayquaza’s rivalry was something that I think originated from the 7th movie.

People always joke about how Ash got his first two badges as pity badges from Brock and Misty, but that's really an inaccurate and unfair assessment of his ability.
He only got 3 legitimate fucking badges out of 8 lol
>only beats Brock by setting off the gym sprinklers: what people often leave out is that this was AFTER Ash also resorted to hooking Pikachu up to a generator and juicing him up with electricity all night
>only gets Misty's badge for stopping a Team Rocket attack mid-match
>His match with Erika gets interrupted by a fire in the gym after she had already dealt with his best option, Charmander. Erika lets him have the badge for aiding in the rescue effort
>gets his ass beat by Sabrina twice, his third battle with her ends without a single pokemon being KO'd because the random Haunter following him around makes Sabrina laugh with a comedy routine and breaks her weird autism spell

Pikachu: We see the most of him so his personality is pretty clear. He actually has a bit of a character arc. He's very solitary at first and often prefers to do things his own way. Usually will refuse to battle or participate if it looks like he'll outright lose unless it's a matter of pride. By the end of the series pikachu moreso puts itself on the line for ash and becomes his most reliable pokemon.
Butterfree: The shy underdog of Ash's team. While you don't see much of its personality once it evolves it's lack of self confidence still shines through in Bye Bye Butterfree.
Pigeot: absolutely just a battlemon. Basically just comes out if ash needs to scout ahead or destroy a balloon.
Bulbasuar: the responsible one. He keeps the other mons in check. Hes also the most parental, taking care of pokemon like Togepi when misty is away.
Squirtle: The cool guy. Hes kinda like the former delinquent of the group. Hes a nice guy but tries to look or act cool. That said he's also one of the first to Job or run away.
Charizard: as a charmander its kinda cowardly and timid. Once it evolves it basically becomes an edgy teenager before turning into a full blown asshole. Doesn't give anyone the time of day unless them as a challenge. The spoiled brat of ashs team.
Other: the tauros are just tauros. Krabby is mostly just a spaced out crab and Muk is just incredibly affectionate. Haunter isn't really Ash's pokemon but he's a big stooge. And I don't remember much about Primeape other than him winning the fighting tournament.

Staryu and Starmie: basically the same. Strictly battle mons and misty's go to for the most part.
Goldeen: a fish
Psyduck: dumb, incompetent, annoying and loves misty despite how much she mistreats him. Definitely the most personality on her team.
Togepi: its just the baby. It does baby things and gets into trouble and nobody knows what it is.

Pretty much all of brock's pokemon are for utility.
Geodude and Onix: pretty much just battlemon. Not much to say about them.
Zubat: basically just Brock's version of pidgeotto.
Vulpix: honestly feels more like a cute pet. Probably just exists to show off the "breeder" aspect of Brock's character.
>Team Rocket
Arbok and Weezing: we get very little insight to their personality. Apparently they're not bad guys. They're just loyal to Jessie and James. What little we do see implies they're just as big of losers as their trainers.
Lickitung: just a battlemon. I often forget Jessie even had this.
Viktreebell: it's either very affectionate or hates James. No in between.
Meowth: Barely needs a mention. Growth is the one pokemon that is basically a person. Of course he oozes personality

by the time I was 10 DP was new. I loved the Cant anime as a kid but I hate the gen 1 games (I still have never finished a Kanto game in my entire life and have no drive to do so now as a 27 year old)

Me personally I enjoy the first season even with all the early installment weirdness it has.

I like the subtle plot line of pikachu and the charizard disobedience story line.

Ash as a character here has the most personality and isn't just the hero guy or the dumb guy.

The dynamics with team rocket and Ash Brock and Misty are a huge highlight.

The OS feels like you're watching a youngster Joey somehow luck his way into getting all 8 badges. As opposed to the manga where the main characters are prodigies and the games where you are always going to win.

One thing I would change is how Ash loses the league as that was absolute bullshit. They should've let Ash lose in a real way showing how luck can only get you so far.

The OS feels weirdly enough like a kid friendly deconstruction of the original red and blue.

Ash isn't some special powerful individual like Yellow or Red or Blue Or Green.

Ash is a average 10 year old who got handed a pokemon who hated him and just said fuck it we ball.

The general anipoke fan would say they prefer xyz or diamond and pearl and that's fair.

I give it a 7/10

Indigo League is the least memorable? Are you high? Some of the most iconic moments in the anime is from this season, episodes 10-25 is one of the show's best stretches. If any season is the least memorable it's Hoenn.

Having all these different perspectives of Kanto from the Anime, Origins, Pokémon Special, and the games make me appreciate each more.

As each of these takes have their own feel that I deeply enjoyment.

My favorite episode of OS is
The Ultimate Test because it provides both world building and comedy in a great episode that feels like it would make sense in every pokemon universe with trainers and pokemon leagues

i love the 151 era of pokemon. they had those really cool episodes with mysterious undiscovered pokemon. the oh-ho in the first episode and the dragonite in the lighthouse episode come to mind. when i was a kid those moments were special. like green ranger in power rangers and the new sailor guardians in sailor moon. they ruined that magic when they mass-introduced like 100s of new pokemon at once

The battle with Koga lasted one minute and was a ohko. It was thrown in at the end of an episode that was mostly about Ash exploring Koga's house and then Team Rocket antics.

well the anime was in kind of a special position to do that kind of thing, they could drip feed new pokemon in the show but in those days you couldn't do the same in a game..a new generation of games was going to release with a big number of new pokemon or nothing. but I did always like it when they did that in the anime, even into gen 3 and 4 it was cool when you'd see next gen pokemon pop up early

Misty's whole team is weird staryu, starmie, Psyduck and Goldeen half of the team either does nothing or loses. I believe Goldeen exists only to flop around in the second episode, the writers did not have a plan for it after that.
