Can someone explain the hype with Flygon? It doesn't seem that special honestly. I really don't get why it's so like.

Guessing its probably a nostalgia thing. Because Trapinch in RSE can be found early game around the 3rd gym, and most people are still building up their full teams around that time. Same gym is also electric type and trapinch is ground type, so I can see it having it be more sought after then other pokemon around that location to more likely beat it. Then it stay on their team until it evolves and they find it a fascinating evolution to keep on their team.

No? I like it because it's the closest we've gotten to a bug/dragon mon, its design is a great mix of cute and cool, it had an interesting typing before it got largely overshadowed by GarSHILLED, and its lore gives it a mystical quality. You can't dumb that down to "nostalgia".

its pretty strong, has a unique type (or did have a unique type when it was introduced) and a sleek design that makes it look like its special

its in the same zone as arcanine, gyarados, scizor, aggron; it looks tough, but is a good pokemon in a normal playthrough, but isnt super overpowered huge numbers

It used to be good in Gen 3, outclassed but still good in Gen 4 and went downhill in Gen 5 onwards. It even got Dragon Dance in Gen 7 after years but that didn't change how weak it became over time. Also denied a Mega.

Oh yeah, you need the fucking googles too.
But to even obtain them you need to beat Wattson and get Rock Smash.
So you can only get Trapinch after the portion of the game where it would be useful.
Have fun raising a ground type that evolves late in a region where water types are everywhere
