Actually, Kot, a full grown human would take too long for a Pokemon to fully digest, making them incredibly inefficient compared to berries which are much better for getting that quick health boost in battle.

That's what I thought at first going by the name but then I realized that was in the set that never got translated. Google translate gives me "Shōga" for ginger and "Tamanegi" for onion which at least contains all the same characters as Ginema and it looks like it has layers, so I went with onion.

There's a few duplicates, I'm guessing the people who designed the gen 4 berries didn't look too closely at the stuff that was already there or just wanted to do their own take on it. Or maybe they're based on specific varieties of the plants, but I'm no botanist so I wouldn't know.

i'm no botanist either but a quick glance at the japanese names and looking it up suggests that's the case as they're named differently in japanese based on that metric

If you can tell those variants apart please post the correct ones so I can update the chart! I want this to be as accurate as possible but honestly I'm well out of my depth. I do see some of them pop up images with different colors or little things like how big the seeds are, but I'm not sure how to tell if it's the same thing at different stages of ripeness or a different variant or what.

yache and custap are different varieties of custard apple, essentially two different plants of, the yache is a cherimoya while the custap is this thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annona_squamosa
which is kind of like a sister plant or something i think

can't find any differences between the chilan berry but with it being an e-reader berry i suppose it makes some kind of sense that it's just the same thing

again, no botanist but i figured looking up the japanese would yield more results since the english translations kinda suck and the wikis have virtually no information on this that isn't just derived from the english name with a single sentence description and it fuckin blows

it's not the only time that gourd was mistranslated, mystery dungeon did it too by calling it a peanut in the original games (it's the same word in japanese)
they like appropriating the shape to something similar looking, hence why they probably called it a papaya

Bulbapedia seems to have some information in the Japanese part of the names section on each berry page
Chesto berries are apparently based on Dioscorea bulbifera, a kind of yam
Leppa berries are Malus prunifolia, a kind of crab apple
Kelpsy berries are specifically based on kombu, a kind of kelp
Cornn is apparently based on sorghum
and Sitrus berry is a pomelo

There's also some interesting ones for different languages. In Hindi, for example, Pecha berries are named after turnips

I still don't get why the E-Reader berries aren't more readily avaliable like the Starf and Enigma Berries are. It's not like they did anything particuarly special in-game either.

Mostly because they didn't have any special, or unique, qualities. If they had a function other than Making Pokeblock, they might have brought them over. Kinda wish they HAD since they are a lot more interesting looking than most of the Gen 4 berries, so we'd have only gotten like 5 shitty berries instead of 17

They're even weirder because they're both usable in berry blending and also removed from Emerald. They're only in Ruby and Sapphire. If you somehow manage to get a Pokemon holding one into JP Pokemon Box Ruby & Sapphire and withdraw it in Emerald, the berry will turn into an Enigma Berry. Some recipes for perfect Contest stats require pokeblocks that use e-Reader berries.

There's also only data for one of them at a time, and scanning in a new one overwrites the old one. So you can abuse this by planting Chilan berries, waiting for them to fruit, then scanning in Strib berries and harvesting them. Chilan berries only take 4 hours to fruit, but produce only 1-2 berries. Strib berries take 4 DAYS to grow, but produce 4-12 berries. So if you convert a fruiting Chilan plant into a Strib, it'll be fruiting too. Then convert them back to Chilan berries and do it again. Easy way to max out on e-Reader berries.

I hope you don't mind if I doubt that, because you can't deposit Pokemon holding the berries in EN versions of PBR&S. You would've had to have a Japanese copy, and I'm not sure if that is compatible with EN versions of the GBA games.

I mean I don't blame you. I've done a lot of work with arbitrary code execution and cloning in Emerald to get a complete legal living dex, mythicals included, as well as just about every berry. I'm only missing Enigma, Starf, and Lansat, and the latter two are because I haven't done anything in the Battle Frontier yet.

No, they're called apples. Different kinds of apples evolve Applin, sliced apples are a sandwich ingredient in SV, and apples are a cooking ingredient in Pokemon Sleep. Leppa berries are an apple-like berry.
