Hey, guys! I just beat the Johto league in Crystal, but the level curve for Red is absolutely insane. Should I push through or go to Emerald? Also, starter poll time!

You can beat Red with a team of level 45s in Crystal, and a team of level 50s in HGSS.

If you can't do this without grinding, you fucking suck at Pokémon, which says a lot because Pokémon is fucking braindead easy.

Red is the greatest retard filter in the entire franchise. I love seeing underage Redditors crying about being "underlevelled" for Red. You really don't understand anything about JRPGs.

To be charitable to OP, it's a fair bit harder if you don't use items in battle and have the game on "set" mode.
I do that, and I tend to need my pokémon in the 60s to consistently beat him.

It's was not the most fun but I just found a strategy that worked and relied on RNG to beat Red with my mostly level 50 team. Still more fun than grinding before the fight. I believe in you OP, beating Red's overleveled team with weaker Pokemon is a badge of honor and shows how much of a shitter he is.

The other anons, in spite of their seethe, are right. Red's team isn't THAT good that you need to be on par with him. As long as you have a good team, strategy and plenty of items, you can beat without too much trouble.
