I don't think I've actually made a single OC that isn't Unovan in origin. Hubert flees to Kalos, but he was still born in Unova. King William and Prince Pierre, as well as Dasein, will almost certainly be made non-canon, so they don't really count.

I have two OCs at the moment: Koa, who's very much Alolan, and Hemlock, who hails from Galar, even if in the story he operates in Alola. I've considered making a Paldean OC, since I can possibly use my own cultural background with such a character. I also had an idea for a cowboy/gunslinger OC, but I'm not sure how I'd do that.

Hmm... maybe a Fire type specialist with a Baile style Oricorio and Flame Breed Tauros? I don't have a female OC yet. A flamenco dancer might be fun. BUT I'M PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON WRITING

Fuck it. I can't draw her at the moment, but I'll grace you guys with a design later.

Hailing from Paldea, and completely unrelated from Koa and Hemlock, it's Ceniza, the dancer! She's a Fire-type specialist who loves singing, dancing and battling with her passionate partners. Her ace is Baile Oricorio. I think she'd be a bit older than most other OCs, not a kid from Naranja or anything. Her dream is to dance at the biggest stages as a coordinator!

WIP team. She's far less work-intensive than Koa and Hemlock story-wise

Fixed up Dragalge's moveset a bit to be more SpAtk oriented. The idea behind it is that it fights more at range due to being slow and not having a high base HP.

Jokes aside, I was never dead. I had a few busy days, is all. I took a train back to my old folks and now I’ll have some downtime. Will I get any writing in? Who knows? But I just thought up a new OC concept, so sunk-cost fallacy dictates that I won’t die, anon.

On another note, I just saw Dune Part 2. Hoooooly shit. Bad end Koa. If I had more of a penchant for grimy writing, that’s what I’d do, but sadly that’s something I’d rather watch from time to time, not write myself. I might revisit the concept in doodles sometime.

No, actually, I’d argue the reverse is played out. Around 20-30 years ago people started to write a lot more moral greyness, and now THAT’S stale. Besides, all that moral greyness doesn’t inspire me to live. You know what inspires me to live? Spider-Man. Dragon Ball Z. Persona 5. Good guys fighting the odds to protect others. Or to do what’s right. Or simply because they want to improve themselves. I want to watch a movie and think “woah, I wanna be like that guy. I should be more like that guy.” And then have that impact my life positively. Although I just got out of Dune 2, a VERY morally grey story, and I liked it a lot despite not having this feeling. I instead admired the quality of the work and the themes behind it, even if I’m not sure if I can take any personal cues from Paul Atreides.

Koa has to be a good person deep down. He works his way up and grows to help his people, and he asks for nothing in return. Koa is naïve, inexperienced, perhaps stubborn, but his best intrinsic qualities are what I believe should drive his story forward, and what readers hold as the takeaway.

Alex and Emily can have their own morally grey tales of acting in the ways they consider to be correct, and that’s perfectly fine. Koa stands up to a madman who threatens his home and his people. That’s as much as I know.

But, how can we be sure that he's completely a bad guy, aside from being greedy? How can you show that Hemlock is all bad? Don't his energy and technology solutions genuinely improve the lives and economy of Alolans despite damaging the environment? Doesn't industrialization genuinely help Alola to become more prominent on the world stage? I'm not suggesting he be made more sympathetic like Franco, but why display his actions as having only negative consequences? Why display Koa's as only having good consequences? Wouldn't the fallout from the expulsion of Macro Cosmos cause an economic depression?

If it seems like I'm accosting you, I'm only trying to help add depth to your story, because that's something that "clear cut good and evil" stories tend to lack.

POSSIBLE SPOILER TALK:
Koa’s father, for example, represents tradition. He thinks Koa shouldn’t be supported in his goal to become a Trial Captain, simply because it has never happened before. He discredits him at every turn. It’s only when they battle that Koa’s father realises his son’s conviction. Hemlock is the polar opposite, an abundance of advancement. The thing is, Hemlock’s industrialisation would bring benefits to the people of Alola — but always at the cost of tradition, and to the environment. Loss of wildlife, environmental damage from Dynamax insertion and mining, and attempted overhaul of the league. Hemlock tries to turn Alola into a mini-Galar by simply attempting to talk Kukui and the Kahunas into it, since they don’t have much clue about what goes into a full industrialisation, but it’s all a ploy at homogenisation. Hemlock seems to remove Alola’s natural guardians, and force the region into what the rest of the world might consider “standard”. Maybe one could think that traditions should not be kept, but these traditions, these myths and guardians, are what make Alola’s people strong, and true progress should come from taking the good and bad of past and future, not ditching one for the other. Hemlock is evil through two means: greed and spite. He wants to line his pockets and fundamentally transform Alola into a much more stale vision. And if he can’t do that, he’d rather burn it all to the ground. He’s manipulative, and constantly tries to spin things around in his wording to mess with others, too.

I swear most of the edgeshit I see around here is people pretending their character isn't as shallow as a puddle through rationalizing their actions as "smart" or "competent" instead of actually make them face actual consequences for their objectively shitty behavior and attitudes. A story or character does not have depth just because it's "grimy" or "realistic".

That's not at all what's happening. Truly intelligent and competent actions do not need to be rationalized as such, they already are. Why does someone have to face consequences for everything? Wouldn't it be interesting to explore how people act when they get away with everything? Must EVERY transgression have "consequences" in order for you to not lose your shit? That's not how the real world works, evil and/or incompetent people do sometimes get away with it.

Nobody is trying to claim that darker and greyer stories have more depth by their nature except for literal retards, and only a fool would believe that such a claim is implied by a statement. Those kinds of stories, however, when executed properly, do indeed tend to have more depth because they have more nuances and subtleties in motives and actions, and tend to have more complex and diverse implications for the audience to think about, as opposed to just "X is good/bad because it demonstrably is", which is the angle that a surprising amount of stories take.

Alola's based on hawaii right? Even surface level research will tell you how the tourism industry is hugely controversial among locals, some rely on it but just as many see it as destructive of local customs, the environment, and being exploitative of hawaiians because it's usually outside corporations reaping the biggest economic gains. Koa's story feels like its evoking that struggle as of what I gathered from that anons writing.

Sure it isn't "gritty" but fights between locals and outsiders looking to make a profit at their expense is realistic enough imho. Koa wants innovation, just not at the hands of someone with no love for his people or region.

I'd say at least half of Hemlock's perception as comically villainous comes from his design. It's not bad, but it's a bit too outlandish for a businessman. Even Chairman Rose was pretty much just a normal businessman in appearance.

Yeah, this here is exactly it. Koa’s story is about uncertainty between tradition and progress. People fighting and him being caught in the middle, figuring out what to do to help his people. Koa is both breaking tradition where he thinks tradition is pointless to uphold, with a lack of Trial Captain in Poni, and he’s also respecting it where it counts. Koa’s not Amish or anything, he has a phone. It’s about the balance of the two extremes.

Also, a lot of this stems from the fact that Alola is one big family. Hemlock never really had a family, which is why he’s very spiteful towards Alolans deep down. I intend to write him as very manipulative, constantly making Koa and the others question their positions, how much they know or whether what they’re doing is right.

How so? There’s been shown to be a good amount of regional divide between Alolans, such as with Kukui and Guzma (in the anime at least, I didn’t find the games very memorable), and I’m sure that the entry of Macro Cosmos into Alola will be a divisive topic that would probably spawn at least a few protests. There’s also still a rural/urban and tradition/innovation divide such as with Koa and his father.

To chime in on the exploitation of the native population and the destruction of local customs and the environment:

After Hawaii was annexed by the United States, it lost its status as a sovereign nation and was eventually voted in as a state. A vote that passed, because most of the voters by that point in time were non-native and had moved to Hawaii as part of the United States' colonization of the islands. The biggest push to acquire the island chain came from the agricultural industry that wanted to exploit the warm tropical climate for the industrial-level farming of cash crops.
Sugar cane was introduced to the islands by the Polynesians long ago, but other varieties were grown on sugar plantations (until 1946 when a tsunami destroyed the transportation network).
Likewise, the pineapple was also non-native to Hawaii and was farmed until it became cheaper to import pineapples from other markets, then that land was repurposed for growing macadamia nuts.

So, while building fancy resorts to attract tourism and clearing massive amounts of land for large-scale farming might bring jobs and money into the islands, it essentially enslaves the population to working on plantations for low pay and westernizes the culture by making it a costume to put on for the tourists rather than a living culture. Not to mention the loss of natural habitat for the Poke'mon species living on the islands.

While Macro Cosmos coming in with promises to improve the lives of the native Alolans by bringing in jobs and urbanizing their villages might seem great, it could be a part of a larger motion to strip Alola of its sovereignty, pave the path for population replacement through immigration, or at the very least lead to the exploitation of Alola by large corporate entities.
And it makes perfect sense for the guardian deities that protect the islands to fight back against the clearing the land for large-scale Poke' Bean farming.

After all, Alola went through a change or two in the span of 3 years — namely, Team Skull left Po Town and it’s been inhabited ever since. You can start there. Grab a template, write the barebones of their character, ask people what they think, flesh that character out through answering questions or just dropping your own writing/art, think about it or try another character when you aren't working on the current one, and keep building off of that until you've developed your own little mountain of original content. Axel plays for glory/competition rather than money so he's always willing to take risks. This risky approach also applies to him tracking down illusive birds. He went to Area Zero alone to track down an Iron Bundle for his team, regardless of any potential consequences. He'll see what he believes to be a legendary bird in the sky and his first instinct will be to send out his Staraptor or Corviknight and chase after it.
Too bad that thrillseeking nature never applied to his social skills. He'll rarely imitate a conversation and would never ask out a girl he likes.

On a prose level I genuinely love Eons in Flux and want to spend more time studying it to try and "capture the magic."

To answer the question, I've been thinking more on Lan since my other writing is stalling out. Also kinda wanna add my hat to the Champion-level character discussion earlier. I've always associated him with extremely risky maneuvers and the more I capture the core belief of the character in my mind the more it makes sense.
He doesn't takes risks for the thrill (consciously) but rather from a silent feeling of desperation. For the 4 or so years he spent with the clan heirs he went from being at the top to witnessing their explosive growth as people and trainers. Which was cool! At first.
From the onset his relationship with them was rocky since he thought they were just a bunch of nepobabies that failed as nobility, but the more he spent time with them the more he grew a soft spot for them. The thing he doesn't realize is that he was also a catalyst for their growth, which leads to this sort of tragically ironic situation where he takes every risk imaginable to stay ahead of them (to help /protect them) and cares less and less for his own wellbeing which then they in turn notice and start to push themselves to further heights which leads to a bit of a vicious cycle. Furia as a setting putting a lot of pressure on all of them exacerbates this problem.
This eventually comes to ahead in the actual story, where this self-destructiveness severely damages their relationships and Lan starts trying to seize power beyond his means, which is actually just straight up what the villians have done historically/are doing presently.
After listening to this analysis on Batman recently, I kinda realize that Batman is to Bruce Wayne what being Champion is to Lan: this self-destructive yet also societally beneficial path that they have chosen to walk that they cannot back down from unless they were literally crippled into not being able to continue.

And for all my rambling, I've never actually sat down and thought about how I write it, but I'll try my best to coax some wisdom out of this sobriety.
First and foremost, it comes from a genuine love of what I'm doing. I love the franchise and I love writing, so most of my effort goes into making the most authentic experience possible--things like researching specific "Galarian" train models to see if any have a history of loose couplings or delving into obscure Bedouin culture just for the sake of three throwaway references. My goal is to bring the setting we know to life and enrich it for the audience in ways that we don't consider when we're watching a savant protagonist through a bird's eye view. When I play, I look at the world with my mind's eye instead of just processing the sparse info on the screen, and transcribing that theatre forms the core of my writing. One of the designers of Etrian Odyssey, Kazuya Niinou, has a great quote on how to use your imagination to spruce up a numbers game. If someone were to boot up Black/White 2 in a Winter month and visit a certain visitor in Nimbasa, it's my hope that EiF shines a new perspective on things and encourages the reader to imagine what else is going on that they don't normally see. I remember one of the early readers mentioning that they didn't think Unova was all that interesting until they suddenly gained a new outlook on it after reading Midnight Triste. That means the world to me.

Soon after Miko got hooked on gambling and Voltorb Flip, he found a Voltorb rolling around near his hometown and excitedly caught it. Despite Voltorbs being rather common near Medali, to the eyes of 4 year old Miko, he was meeting the star from his favorite game.

Sorry this isn't specific or necessarily just about writing, but I love seeing how everyone's characterizations come out in their works, writing and art alike.
Miko LOVES leaving things up to chance and is always taking risks in both battles and gambling, living off the highs and lows of winning big and losing hard. Despite all this, he does keep his guard up a bit around strangers and sketchy individuals.

One of the main themes is the contrast between its two main characters. Phos has a very terse style to reflect her frustration and isolation; she's strong, but also vulnerable, calling to mind the gnostic themes of the untamable feminine spirit versus the masculine desire to dominate that forms the core of her 1995 source inspiration. On the other hand, while writing Franco I ask myself "what is the single most verbose, pretentious thing I can say in this situation?" He's a Paldean Champion-rank valedictorian and uses corporate influence as a cudgel, but also sabotages himself because he wants to be proven right more than he wants to be proven the winner--as far as he's concerned, he's already won. Convincing Phos is the ultimate test of his belief that the world would be better if it just listened to him.
Establishing that contrast between them does most of the heavy-lifting for me in each episode. Fun fact: literally all of their back-and-forth dialogue that you read was improvised as I was writing it just by imagining how they would bounce off each other. Make of that what you will.
It's important to me that the co-stars, the Pokemon, also feel like realized characters instead of fighting automatons to help capture the childhood magic of going on an adventure with strange new friends. Scrafty has the Intimidate ability as shown by how feisty it is in battle, but it also shows a gentle nature when it nuzzles up to its Trainer and reaches for her hand when it's concerned. Annihilape is a seething wall of hate that wants to cut loose, but it's a disciplined and calculating rage as a result of Franco's training--something it couldn't achieve on its own in the wild.
Life has winners and losers, but it doesn't have side characters, so I feel it's important to give even one-off characters the idea that there's more to them beyond their entry and exit of the narrative.

Emily's a huge risk taker. She hates all the sitting around, planning and waiting of normal people. She also knows that sometimes there is no perfectly clean solution to an issue and sometimes one MUST take the option that simply has the least terrible consequences, because otherwise it will just end up being even worse through her inaction. She also simply just has full confidence in her own abilities and the abilities of her Pokemon to see her through to the other side just fine. The very IDEA of failure doesn't even register in her mind when looking at a situation laid out before her, even if she is taking steps to mitigate the chances of failure occurring.

Finally, when it comes to writing the plot, I let the scene carry itself forward, and only step in to direct when I've accidentally written myself out of options. I give a character a set of tools and then ask myself "what would they do in this situation?" I know what I would do, but this shouldn't be about me.
There's a flow to my writing, a certain cadence that bloats my word count: I'll imagine a one-sentence outline of a core scene, ask myself how we got there, then let the diction bridge the gaps between. "Dueling an Iron Valiant on a train." How did we get there? Well, Phos has a grappling hook.
I don't use a formula when I write, but I do notice a trend where episodes tend to "fold" like a boomerang. An idea will be established, then that idea is later mirrored in an unexpected way. The song in Episode 1 sounds like it reflects Phos's rebel attitude, but then we meet Franco and the real context clicks--it's about two incompatible views trying to get through to each other. Episode 2 starts with Phos jumping off a bridge and ends with Phos jumping off a bridge; the prequel starts and ends with a specter in a sandstorm.

If that's the case, then that means I succeeded. When I write, I write so that anyone can read through it and understand what's going on even if they don't have any prior knowledge or history with the subject (take notes, college students).
I want the Paradoxes to feel out of place, that's why I never refer to them by their real names. Like Franco and Phos, we're outside of their context looking in and trying to make sense of them. It's my hope that it encourages a reader to question whether or not the "anomalies" have a place in the world. They're unique, they're dangerous, but maybe they have a good reason for being the way they are.

David always has Swampert outside of his Pokéball, so most of the time both are seen together. If David is working security, Swampert is doing patrols. If he is working retail, he is a mascot for the small Pokémart, and if it's working moving boxes in depos, Swampert is another capable number. They also talk a lot between each other, even if David uses words, and Swampert grunts.

David developed a gamble move out of his experience in the Sootopolis Origin Cave. He repeated the same circumstances in Lavaridge, and he got burned more than once before he could finally dominated it. Final Gamble is his best move, but everytime he shows it to someone, he always asks "are you willing to lose?".
This doesn't mean losing the battle, but to put everything on the line, including your life or your Pokémon's. Only those who are willing to put everything on a whim can use it.

Belts, deep pockets, chains, necklaces, holsters, things of that caliber. Somewhere you can pull it out and throw it quick if a Golbat pounces on you. Lot of creative potential with magnets and other crafts.

A Trainer's biggest source of "stable" income is living meal-to-meal by battling other Trainers for lunch fare. The better you are at battling, the farther from home you can travel. A good Trainer can make a name for themselves by being the strongest around when danger comes crawling out of the wild.

obviously on very good terms as you'd expect from more classic stories of pokemon and their trainers! fuecoco and bibi share that unshakeable bond only known to pairs of silly little guys. while bibi has her moments of doubt fuecoco is the mood maker of her party even as a skeledirge. its unfailingly positive and jolly attitude is its own way of protecting its trainer, as he realizes that fundamentally, she's a very lonely person. its embodiment of more ghostly traits also soothe bibi somewhat after her near death mishaps.

toxtricity and alto are basically brothers, with toxtricity being genuinely laid back and unbothered by the going ons around him which lets him keep an eye out for alto, who's good at keeping cool under most circumstances but prone to panicking when genuinely stressed out.

tesoro couldn't have cared less for gholdengo back when it was a gimmighoul but it's the apple of his eye now. polishes it every night til it practically sparkles. on more mundane days they judge passerby and opponents like a snobby popular kid and his yesman.

Figured I should mention this, but in my universe, signature moves are inherent to the behaviors of Pokemon. As a result, Dragapult also knows Shadow Ball and U-Turn. Shadow Ball is funny because of how it charges it up using its tiny hands and drops it like a payload. U-Turn is there in case a Hydreigon shows up to the party, so that he can get an SE hit off before switching into something with a more suitable typing.

I had Hydreigon on my mind when I wrote this but I suppose that U-Turn would be Dragapult’s counter to pretty much any Dark STAB attacker such as Honchkrow (especially since it flies), Kingambit, and Mega Sharpedo and Houndoom.

i never took ace to mean the strongest party member so much as the pokemon a trainer relies on most and unlike koraidon, dirge+bee were pretty much there from the get-go. i lean more on the fantastic side of things, so nobody in my settings would be constrained by BST anyways. koraidon's advantage in raw strength is also mitigated by the fact that once it joins the roster for indigo disk stuff its lacking a year+ in combat experience compared to the team mainstays.

it does make the most sense to steal it though, ace stuff aside. guess bibi would have to get around via kilowattrel or something so she could maul him if that's the case.

Normally, Alex refrains from killing people out in the open as it’s a pain in the ass to have Revavroom and Dragapult cremate the body and then for Alex to scatter the ashes, but something like that would probably send him over the edge and just jump straight to using the gun. He’s not wearing plates, so he should go down fairly quickly. And then just break the ball afterwards.

Also yeah, I’d agree that thinking so much about in-game mechanics kinda ruins narrative power scales. Legendaries should be almost unbeatable to the average trainer. In my own writing, I think types should matter, and moves too, but Pokémon act a lot more like in dex entries or the anime (to reasonable levels). That means there’s a TON more variety in what competitive trainers use. Alexanon, would someone bring a real-life OU team to the league? What about VGC?

I don’t know that much about exercise, but Koa spends a lot of his day parkouring around Vast Poni Canyon. He basically tries to gain enough strength to move around the place like any other Pokémon would. He’s a lot more athletic than he is lift strong. He’s also a teen, so he won’t punch people to death or anything, but he could hold his own decently in a fight from his special training with Mo-o along the years. In my writing, humans can’t do Pokémon moves or anything save for maybe the mediums who can tap into VERY basic Psychic energy, but Koa’s picked up some amateur martial arts from hanging around with a Dragon/Fighting type so much.

The thing is, Pokemon has never been consistent with powerscaling. Several Pokédex entries state that Tyranitar is both impervious to any attacks and can destroy mountains on a rampage, while Dragapult can fly and fire missiles at Mach 1, but I don’t see any stories depicting that, as well as the fact that people in the anime regularly perform superhuman feats >>55640374. Ingame, Zygarde is basically a glorified Garchomp, which Weavile was previously known for countering. And if that doesn’t work for some reason, bring in a speed invested Kingdra that knows Blizzard and Ice Beam, and if that STILL doesn’t work, bring in Articuno.

I can see why people would depict Legendaries as ultra-powerful, but I would never do anything like that, especially when people like N and Ghetsis have been shown to have full control over Legendaries. I’m trying to find a balance between Pokespe and Smogon, basically.

I might draw this later, but when Koa was 5 years old, his father took him to the Canyon for the first time, with a few Poké Balls. The intention: catch his first dragon. A partner he’d be bonded to for life, as is tradition in the Ka’uhane family. Koa’s father was bonded to his Haxorus that same way, and his father before him. They ventured in the caves and cliffs, sifted through the grass, and Koa eventually came across a pack of Jangmo-o and Hakamo-o. The runt of the litter caught Koa’s eye, and so did him to the little Jangmo-o.

I kinda want to write this out eventually as a full flashback in my writing, but long story short, Koa caught Mo-o on equal terms, when they were both very young. You see, the way I envision the relationships between Pokémon and humans is symbiotic. When a Pokémon encounters a human that is strong enough, or quite simply worthy, be it through combat prowess or strength of character, most of the time a successful capture will indicate that the Pokémon has become impressed with the human and they will agree to form a partnership. In the wild, Pokémon that live in packs accept this as a fact of life, almost like children leaving the nest. Maybe they’ll miss their young if this happens, but they won’t be upset. It’s kind of like how a parent “loses” a child when they marry.

There are rare instances of caught Pokémon going back in the wild for a few days to go visit their family.

Legendaries really vary DESU.
It also doesn't help how inconsistent the lore is between medias. Like, remember when the birds were world ending threats then they just became slightly stronger than normal niggas of which there's multiple? Good times.
Then again trAshnime is TRASH.
But even ignoring that you can't even just say big legends = super duper le strongest, sub-legends = defeatable if you're a 1% trainer because even the powerlevels between the mons in the categories vary greatly.
I mean, like, Miraidon and Koraidon are Big Legends on paper but no one will convince me that they're stronger or even capable of competing with a Palkia or a Necrozma or a Groudon.
Likewise, you won't be able to convince me a Regigigas will be weaker than an Urshifu or Ogerpon or a Tapu.
And mythicals? There's Arceus to begin with, but then you have shit like Zarude or Zeraora that makes you go "really nigga???" that you know are just mythical for shilling purposes and nothing else and when it comes to it are just normalfag Pokemon with a shiny sticker slapped on and in no way are those even scratching a Deoxys or a Mew in a battle.

All that said, individual species strength is always a contentious topic that's not limited to just legendaries and mythicals, it applies to normalfag pokemon too and expanded ever further to wondering to what level should things like UBs and Paradoxes should be at, so ultimately it's all up to your own interpretation of lore you're applying to your OC's story and plot and world and setting and stuff.

There's some that simply just have really hax conceptual abilities but in terms of battling strength are not all that.
Terapagos is a prime example of it. The species as a whole jobbed to a fucking earthquake to the point of practically extinction and the only one remaining only has all that hax from crystalizing energy for millions of years until tera bullshit came to be.

My main issue is trying to get into a situation where there's no Weaviles to be had, because if one is present then Alex will go for that one instead. As much as I would like to set the tone for things going forward by Alex getting nearly killed by a psycho Weavile that's all like "YOU DARE CHALLENGE ME?", that would give him a phobia of the species and so I can't let that happen. Normally I would prefer for Alex to catch his Pokemon in their first stage, but for plot reasons he HAS to catch a Sneasel in particular.

Thanks, I guess. I try to balance the traits in a person that I find admirable and weigh them with the reality of those traits. Being naïve is a negative trait. But one doesn’t have to be misled by cynicism either, in my opinion. I’ve said it a few times, but my biggest drive to write is wanting to create aspirational stories. I want to see characters whose traits I want to aspire to have.

As per being air-camped, it’s not like Koa’s team is entirely defenseless against flying opponents. Sky Uppercut is, in my writing, a move that is more effective on flying opponents, almost like a Fighting type Smack Down. Mo-o can reach flying opponents that way. Stretchy’s Psychic also works like telekinesis, so the derpy palm tree can bring enemies down that way. As per Dragapult, it’s not like Koa never teaches his Pokémon ranged moves either. Plus, as soon as Rebel the Gabite evolves, Koa will have a flier of his own. I’m not saying “nah I’d win” or anything, but Koa wouldn’t be hard-countered by this kind of thing. He has options, like anyone else.

I’d like to also detail the fact that I do away with the 4 moves limitation in my writing. Pokémon just have a collection of techniques, they gain them as they grow and train. In officially sanctioned competition, you’d probably have to register 4 moves to use in the fight, though, because otherwise anyone can counter anyone else with coverage.

The way moves work in my story is that a Pokemon can store (not learn) one move every ten levels (yes, I am including leveling). However, the rate at which they learn moves is the same as their game counterparts. As for TMs, a Pokemon can learn any move that it would "make sense" for them to learn. This is kind of subjective, but for example, a Kingdra can't learn Psychic moves aside from Agility and Rest, but it can learn fucking Flash Cannon and Iron Head. Why? Well, it probably can't have the mental stimulation to do Psychic moves, but it can probably be trained to fire out Steel energy or imbue it into its horns for a ramming attack. Same thing with Ice Beam and Blizzard, Water is just ultimately Ice in a different state. However, it can't learn stuff like Toxic or Sludge Bomb despite having a nozzle because Water can't pollute itself on its own, it has to be polluted. But the reverse isn't true for Dragalge because polluted water can end up purified by just flowing. It's a rather convoluted system, but I personally think it works. It also deincentivizes the use of firearms because you don't know what the hell your opponent's Pokeballs are packing, which gives me an excuse for Pokemon to remain the primary tool for violence despite firearms being included (although, you can bet your ass that they're going to still play a considerable role).

Signature moves are an exception, as they cannot be taught by TM. Signature moves are inherent to the behavior of Pokemon and are automatically learned upon evolution or just known from the start, and they do not take up "move slots", which means that some Pokemon can know up to 12 moves, and in the specific case of Hydrapple, 14, because it knows all of its signature moves of its other evolutions as well.

I don't agree with the idea that League battles would restrict moves based on anyone being able to have coverage, because stats and typing are still an important factor. This just makes coverage more technical

A lot of Normal type moves are also known by default by all Pokemon or all Pokemon that fit into a certain category. For example, basically any Pokemon can Tackle, but only Pokemon with sharp claws can Slash. This doesn't apply to "upgraded" moves such as Giga Impact, because those would take a lot more effort and weight to pull off. As a result, most Pokemon know at least four moves from even Level 1. Crunch is a special case, because since it's a Dark type move, I imagine that the user imbues Dark energy into its jaws before Crunching, and it would have to be trained to do that. It would only be inherent to certain Dark types like Houndoom.

Oh, and if you think the example with Kingdra is ridiculous, that's literally just its TMset in the current generation.

This is a fun topic so I wanna chime in. For Ruka's story I imagine moves are a bit more nebulous. Like how a move is executed depends on the pokemon and
How they were trained. There's not a definitive way a move has to look or be executed. The names are moreso a way to categorize what your pokemon is doing rather than a hard set description.
Ie. Any powerful fire type move that comes out in a continuous stream is considered a "flamethrower". It doesn't really matter how it's summoned.

Also much like the anime a lot of moves may have different applications or uses. For example, Psychic can just pelt the opponent with psychic waves, Or lift them into the air and sling them around, or even redirect attacks and throw objects at the opponent. You can train your pokemon to use different versions of moves or trust your pokemon to use it in the best way possible.

Also type immunities work like this.
Electric moves do not effect ground type pokemon. However a powerful enough attack can do damage from the sheer heat.
Flying types and pokemon with levitate instinctively fly high into the sky when they see a ground type move coming. However they can be hit by a ground type move if theyve been stunned or knocked out of the sky by another move.
If you try to hit a ghost with a "normal" or fighting attack and they instinctively phase through them. Conversely ghost type moves tend to have ethereal properties that don't work on pokemon that have no awareness like normal types.
Fairy types have an innate barrier around them that protects then from opposing magic, namely Draconic attacks. I think a move like Dragon breath would just go around them while a move like Dragon claw would just lose its dragon properties and become a regular claw swipe.

i'm mostly with ruka anon on how fights work out but if i had to add on my own little flair it might be the addition of some monster hunter esque elements in the form of visibly damage or weakened body parts, mostly for heavily armored pokemon like tyranitar or metagross though it applies to everything. basically the more damage they take the more you can sort of chip away at their armor, and you can exploit those weakened areas to incapacitate foes or land knockout hits!

i also think moves should kind of be able to interact with each other or the environments in some cases. like for example if stealth rocks set up a pokemon using psychic could hurl the stones at the foe, which would act like makeshift power gem, or a pokemon using a strong enough flamethrower on a body of water another pokemon is swimming in could result in a scald like attack.

I like having one mobility move and one utility move on all the movepools. The other two are the full offensive moves that may vary on the mon.
Yes, I like four moveslots only because I think that restriction breeds creativity. And makes for more fun, simple and easy to understand battles. With infinite movepools I feel battles become bogged down and drag too long and become unreasonably large and dilute the roles and specialties of the mons.

If you think of moveslots less as the literal ability to punch something really fast and more in terms of the Jack Vancian method of dedicating part of your skull to keeping incredibly powerful elemental energy in your head without having an aneurism, then you'll see the whole Type system really start to click.
Essentially, each Type is a type of energy, and each Move is a pattern or wavelength of that energy. A Heatran and a Happiny can both use Fire Blast by tapping into the same wavelength, but one is obviously going to be much more potent a result than the other. Some mons instinctually pick up on these wavelengths, while others need to be instructed on how to harness them. Like, say, instructed through an audio recording. An audio recording played on a disc. But maybe the disc is fragile and can only maintain the integrity to play that wavelength once. See where I'm going with this? Without a little boost from a performance-enhancer to sharpen the mind, a user can only channel that wavelength so many times before it's expended and needs to be recharged with a good sleep or meditation--this is how Fire Blast and Ember have different power pools despite drawing from the same base element.
A Water-Type Attack isn't just the blunt force trauma of getting blasted by a fire hose, it's also suppressing an opponent's ability to channel their own energy effectively until they're physically incapable of battling anymore. Dark-Type attacks aren't just effective against Psychic-Types because it hurts to have your hand bitten by a big rat or dog, but because Dark-Type energy not only shuts down an opponent's ability to channel Psychic Energy, but completely nullifies it too. Forgetting Bite doesn't mean you forget how to chew your food, you just unlearn how to focus Dark energy around your teeth to pierce through steel or tear into the ethereal.

I generally agree, but I don’t include type immunities, instead they are simply weaknesses. I just find it fucking dumb that a Ribombee could take a Dragon Rush to the face and emerge unscathed. Flying types and flying Pokémon would take 1X damage from Ground attacks, it’s just very improbable that they’d get hit by them.

I agree with this and I’d even go a bit further. I think that mechanical type Pokemon are held together by Infinity Energy and break apart when fainted. For example, a Klinklang’s gears fall apart ant to the floor, or Stakataka just crumbles into a pile of bricks. All of these pieces are collected back into the Pokeball when returning, however.

My rule is that a Pokemon can have a huge pool of available moves but using too many moves in a single battle will overwhelm the Pokemon. So usually you decide on what moves you'll be using in the battle and craft a strategy around that.

glad to see we're of like minds! another thing i like to imagine is ground types being slightly faster or more mobile than usual on sandy terrains, and non-floating pokemon not specifically suited to that environment slowed. stuff like garchomp can pretty much just swim through the sand whereas bulkier things like hippowdon or great tusk would have some kinda evolutionary feature built into their limbs to promote ease of movement that most non-ground types lack

i also like thinking about the utility of moves outside of smacking things. still dunno whether i want to give bibi a crawdaunt or not but if i did i think part of its fighting style would be to use aqua jet to negate its slow movement speed out of the water, like instead of always aiming for the opponent it's just good to use for getting from one side of the field to another

Same. With Jynx I like to imagine she can flash freeze water underneath her so she can essentially walk on water. Of course it works much better with still water. She can also use ice beam to create platforms or paths for others to use. Also maybe certain moves give properties like I can imagine high jump kick and sky uppercut give you temporary immunity to ground moves.

Drawing continues to be hard.
Once more, I have to reiterate that drawing eyes is extremely hard and I am shocked at how little complaining I see about that in comparison to drawing feet and hands.

Kohaku becomes much more jaded. Doesn't ojou speak anymore except on very rare cases where it slips out when she's genuinely excited about something once again. Comes with obligatory makeover and character development haircut. I tried to evoke something lolita-ish with this new outfit but wanted her dress to continue being simple.
The sparkle on her eye has gone completely black as a result too. Tried to give her a sharper eye shape too.
Even so, she couldn't bring herself to chop her drill off. Maybe a sign that she can pick herself up again?

1.Try using a larger resolution canvas and smaller brush size. This will allow you to do finer details, and shrinking a larger picture after your done makes it look nicer than actually drawing it at that size.
2. It's a good idea to start with simple shapes and then draw the clothing and details on a new layer above it. I tried to mark out joints and such to give you an idea of how I visualize them. This will help you follow the curves of the body when doing clothing to make it less flat. You don't want to segment your drawing by drawing arm lines directly out of the clothing for example, but rather the shoulder underneath the clothing (that's why I suggest doing the shapes first).
3. I added some eye close-ups. You can start with simple shapes for this too like a pentagon and build on it from there - for anime like Pokemon, the top lines are usually thicker to indicate eyelashes. I also drew some of the Gen 1 eye shapes you would see for girls like Misty (tall oval pupils) and adult guys/villains (triangular, smaller pupils).
4. Draw things on separate layers so you can easily go back and edit or erase the simple shapes when the clothing is done, and color without affecting the line layer.

Just start with one, any ol' one will do. If you consider yourself at step 0, any progress at all means you're better off than you were.
For what it's worth, here's what I do to warm up: I start by drawing circles. Circles and arcs of all sizes just to get myself into the habit of using my entire arm to draw a curve instead of trying to put all the responsibility in my wrist. You'll see what I mean if you try it. Then, I draw columns and rows of lines, not to make them perfectly straight or at the perfect length, but to draw lines as quickly as possible without veering off and accidentally bisecting them. After that, I make S-shaped ribbons and imagine them twirling like party streamers. This helps me get in the groove of curling hair or cloth material. I don't actually do the box thing at all, because I think the skillls used in making boxes already gets factored in with what I'll suggest next:
Learn how to replicate poses. Your character design is pretty, you obviously have an idea of what you're aiming for, but the pose is just "flower petal pressed in a book." Next time you play a game, really take the time to stop, smell the flowers, and take notes on how your dude is animated. Try to pick out three core frames of an animation that comprise a beginning, middle, and end together, and study those moments. The most important part of drawing, IMO, is capturing the "flow" of movement that creates the illusion of depth in a 2D image.

I would suggest a few things to start.
The main thing would be image searches; 'figure drawing basics' 'figure drawing reference' and 'pose reference.' If you have a specific pose in mind but don't know how to draw it, search it with "reference" ie; 'crouch reference' 'crossed arms reference' then find something you like and copy it. This can help you learn if you continue copying and applying what you're seeing.
As someone went to school for animation the most solid advice I got was to learn how to draw a realistic body because once you understand the body you can caricturize it.
But if you really just want to draw some anime girls, find pics you like and copy them (important distinction is that you do this mainly for practice not to pass it off as your own)

Thanks, and it's only beyond you if you let it be. If you can already picture the pose in your mind just try drawing it. I've been drawing all my life and I'm worse than I was in school cuz I stopped practicing regularly, so I can tell you practice is important, you have to develope the skill like any other.

Some other general advice;

Cause they're a lot of what they've done has surrounded Emily. The 3 are basically bound together and generally doing the same things or in the same general area. You don't hear much going on with Mari or Arai without Emily involved apart from Mari basically being non-gyaru Rouka while Arai is either tinkering, buying stuff to use in her tinkering, training/sparring with Emily or out fighting goons with Emily.

He lets his pokémon Mega Evolve because he knows Mawile can take the physical strain it puts on her body, and in return, she is willing to bear the pain, because she has faith in his judgement. If it's what it takes to win them a fight, they're willing to hurt for each others sake, and it's that trust that allows them to yield its brutal yet raw, destructive power.
Outside of battle, he certainly has a soft spot for her.
