all of the first partner pokemon in nu generations are being designed with compshit in mind. 90% of what people like in first partner pokemon now have nothing to do with it's actual visual design.

The whole trend of starters being designed around comp started with Contrary Serperior in the Dream World (which also started the additional problem of more FOMO in the games)

It started in gen 4. All three get the new iconic smoggie move stealth rock, all get insane coverage and strong STABs. Even the second partner pokemon is broken overpowered in gen 4.

Nobody uses the Paldea starters in competitive though? They just can't compete with the broken pokemon like Flutter Mane ChienPao Ogerpon etc. Incineroar and Rillaboom are the only starters given everything to be top tier in competitive and more, many consider the two to become even more valuable in restricted formats.
