Stopped playing after gen 7 was really bad. I saw an anime poster for a new season with a beige tentacool and wondered what it was and found this.

Hot damn. I thought regional forms were boring, uninspired schlock. The pokemon company is this lazy?

they're terrible, people defend them because "le real animals are like this!!" but, isn't that what regionals were replicating? Not only are they reusing designs, now they call them new Pokemon and give them dex numbers?

Its a different concept. Regional mons are based on animals that are the same species but grew up and adapted in different environments. Convergents, or whatever their official name is, are based on the real life convergent evolution where an animal or plant are completely different from one another and end up having similar body plans like pic related.

They can still do this without making the pokemon look like a pallet swap of the original,

Wiglett could've been better if it wasn't just a white, slightly longer Diglett, Garden eels in real life have colored stripes or spots if Wiglett had that, it would've made it stand out from Diglett just a bit more.

Toadscool was a bit better with this but then Toadscruel is just too much like Tentacruel

Poltchageist and Sinistcha are better but I feel like these 2 were intended to be Regional variants since they're still based on Tea but cause Kitakami is in an unnamed region, they couldn't go that route.

In looks sure, but it has WAY different vibe when you see its animations. They did a good job.

The thing is that Convergent is not an official term and is literally NOT what these Pokemon are but Pokemon fandom autistically latch to it.

Convergent evolution is two separate species evolving similar traits due to living in similar or outright the same environment, not "HURR THIS WATER-LIVING JELLYFISH LOOKS LIKE THIS LAND-LIVING MUSHROOM DOOOR".
