Mostly a meme for spamming Flare Blitz or using a Life Orb.
GameFreak was experimenting with giving starters specific niches rather than being basically generalists, they only fully committed later. Infernape probably also counts for that.

nice trips.
Mostly agree, though Blaziken and infernape are definitely offensive mons especially infernape being a glass canon. I would say GF started to try and really differentiate the starters around gen 4~5, and then give signature moves and unique archetypes in gen 6. I guess hidden abilities helped a lot too.
