Jobberchu's fragility is really starting to show and is only really viable against NFE mons at this point. Picrel a single fire fang from Charmeleon.
I'll keep him around for the sovl, but when it comes time for the indigo conference preparations, I'll realistically need to get a 6th team member that can pull his weight.

They hit this game's gym level distribution with the johto stick. It still plays very well all things considered though; I consistently find myself fighting things 1-2 levels above me and not really falling that far behind while still having ample XP to train all 6 of my mons, even if I have to be extremely picky about what fights Pikachu can actually take.

Perhaps. Here's the current squad. Bulba is fighting for the type slots and roles of Nidoqueen for poison type and Exeggutor for grass.

I already have a light ball. The damage I did to Charmeleon in that screenshot was a light ball'd thunderbolt. Pikachu can only think mean thoughts and give tickles to anything with a non-zero spdef without it.

pretty good, surprisingly sturdy for a bird as long as it's not getting hit by rocks and it does decent damage, it's ability where it gets priority with flying moves at full health will be funny if I can get acrobatics at some point

Yeah I'm mildly concerned about the level curve longterm. I'm crossing my fingers they did something like clover where after a certain point everything is just N+1 and scaling to your highest so that cycling teams each region like Ash does is actually viable. I will make an effort to swap out mons to keep the playthrough interesting between each major region, but I may give that up depending on how autisticly grindy it gets bringing everyone new up to par.

In the anime they showed he had a full team of 6, he just didn't need anything except the Darkrai and Latios. That's a bit of a letdown on the game's part; that would've been a cool opportunity for a proper Ubers match.

This was the first fangame I played after a very old version of Desolation. In that regard I think it was an impressive game, the pixel art was good, the game ran smoothly, and speed up and skip text options were provided.
I do not like some parts of the experience including how you were unable to return during the second part. Additionally the second part seemed bloated. While more content is a good thing I can't picture myself playing 6 more acts the size of Part 2. Lastly, some of the quests were tedious, such as the Stufful quest.
I think it was a decent experience but I hope the developer tries to narrow the scope of this project.

I'm glad he was in a cooperative mood. I have no idea if I'm supposed to have this or not at this point in the game, but it's mine now. Perhaps I'll take him to the Indigo league. Having a consumable limit break system sounds sensible for an RPG yet really retarded for Pokemon. I can see how a dev would arrive at the conclusion it's a good idea, but that sounds fucked to balance no matter how you cut it. If fights are balanced around the player not having it, using a mega lets a player "skip" trainers. If fights are balanced around players using it on each major boss, now there's a mandatory grind/walkback tax to refill your supply before or after each use.

I'm planning on writing a big autistic review post at the end, and I think the biggest thing this game is missing out on is presentation value. All the references and stuff are there, but the implementation is so half-hearted for even major things like traveling partners being reduced to rival battles. Even just having them fade into your pocket as you travel together, as per JRPG norms, would be a step up from leaving them behind entirely. Better yet, they could've made them into a gameplay element. Imagine if once per realtime day, Brock cooked a meal and gave you a random assortment of berries as leftovers? With small things like that, a companion would still feel valuable even if they're not actively doing anything or fighting anyone.

This is simultaneously the highest effort and the lowest effort fangame I've played given the sheer scope of it. It just needs a bit more care to breath the early regions, at the very least, to life. At the very least, it never devolves into bad game territory and while there were bits in the SS Anne and just after Vermillion that felt a bit trainerspammy, those were outliers for Kanto at least.
So far it's like a saltine cracker in pokemon game form. It's not bad, but it's also not good either. It's not something you'd recommend to someone going "Bro you gotta try this cracker!", but it's also eerily comforting when you're done eating more explosively flavorful other food.

The manga had that talking clefairy that I heard was planned to be Ash's starter in the anime to contrast Team Rocket's talking meowth but was changed to pikachu pretty close to the last minute. I wonder if in that timeline Clefairy would've been shilled as hard as Pikachu has been in this one. I'm a retard and hit the function key to reset the game instead of take a screenshot so I had to do that fight again. Clefable thankfully swept it easily second time around, setting up on Dragonite without issue.

I just rechecked. Apparently Red's main pokemon was a Poliwrath named Poli, from the mange from the two first gens. Poliwhirl and Clefairy were apparently contenders for becoming the official mascot of Pokemon, with Poliwhirl being on the original logo for the first pokemon stores.

It doesn't do any of the offensively bad things a lot of other fangames do, but it's very bland at times and relies on you spotting references (mainly to various character of the weeks) to derive nostalgia-value from it. I'm having a decent time playing it, but the social aspect of screencapping all of it and discussing it on /vp/ probably factors into that given that I've not seen the anime since early hoenn was airing on TV as a kid and everything prior to that is filtering through a 20-something year old memory.
If you want a slightly clumsy anime nostalgia trip, give it a try I guess, but it's a quantity of quality game.

I remember her being a borderline softlock on past versions of the game on hard mode. I seem to recall her team couldn't realistically be beaten by the mons you find in the area, so it was very possible to get yourself in a position where you had to reset your save if what you brought on your own couldn't beat her either.

i remember one particularly dedicated autist proved in at least v13 or v12, you could actually beat valarie with a team of caught pokemon from the immediate area and with enough EV grinding off the local mons as well

I use some TMs to give Chik a real moveset of Toxic, Synthesis, Energy Ball and Reflect which is enough to Toxic stall out Falkner's Hoothoot, Dodrio, and Pidgeot without any bag items. The Dodrio could've been a big problem but it decided to not Drill Peck on the turn when Reflect dropped so everything was okay.

Understandable. In a weird way, I think this whole experience is made more enjoyable by my imperfect memory of all of this. It's like comparing someone else's trying to draw something by memory to my own memory of that thing.
Given the sheer amount of filler (and thus character of the weeks) Johto and Hoenn have, I suspect they'll be the most fun parts of the playthrough for that strange sense of surrealism alone.

Brock's mons are level 45+, however. A combination of Intimidate+Bayleaf's Reflect makes it possible to take down a few of them without Articuno or bag items, but not all 4. The natural rain lets Gyarados easily switch in on Vulpix as well.

I begin setting up Bulk Ups to hopefully let Heracross tank 1 flying STAB from Scyther, but Spinarak gets the poison proc on the first Poison Sting which isn't ideal, even with Guts since offensive power isn't really what I'm lacking. It can't really hurt me aside from the poison tick damage, so I bulk up until I'm about half health to let my Sitrus berry top me off and then go on the offensive. He sends out Scyther next who then elects to use Slash instead of a flying move so he's deleted by Rock Slide. The last Metapod stands no chance.

Adamant is a rough roll but sunny day+fire STAB should still do decent damage so I'm not super concerned. It might even be a blessing in disguise if we don't get Dark Pulse until super late for reasons you said; Crunch is usable with Adamant.

They put way more effort into Goldenrod than any other town so far visually. Pokemon center warp mon is Drowzee. It's still plausible it can teleport us...for now.
Unfortunately this game seems to use only 1 town theme and 1 route theme per region. When the game's audio already requires a separate download, another 25mb of sovl won't turn anybody away to make areas more distinct., so it's anyone's guess why the devs did this.

Assuming you mean Fire Ash, you can get a version at

or brave their discord for a slightly newer version with some bugfixes.
This is not a romhack and you don't need any patchers or emulator. Just extract the main game into a folder, then download the audio and extract that into the game's directory. It's pretty retard-proof, don't worry.

Clefairy gets Dynamicpunch of Metronome and lands the hit on Bayleaf complicating the start of the fight with the confusion. Gyarados has no way to recover HP and I want to keep him as fresh as possible so I opt to tough it out and Synthesis off the confusion self damage+doubleslaps.
Nidorina comes out and I opt to have Gyarados quickly dispatch it with Earthquake rather than risk it poison Bayleaf.
I switch Bayleaf back into Miltank to get a Toxic off and reset Gyarados' intimidate activation. Miltank starts using Rollout, but this only ensures it dies to toxic while I spam synthesis.
