you need to stop hoping anything from new pokemon games will have the same longevity as the previous ones. They exist merely to fill a slot for a year or so, then get thrown out like a napkin.

No because when Gen 3 was made pokemon was losing its mainstream appeal. Now the franchise is a multibillion dollar empire that doesn’t need to put any effort

It is objective fact that the starters past Gen 3 have
1) more complicated designs with more individual details
2) more specific inspirations beyond just being cartoony elemental monsters

Whether you think modern starter designs are better or worse is irrelevant, the difference in starter design philosophy from Gens 1-3 to Gens 4-present is readily apparent.

Mudkip, Treeko, and Torchi was probably the best first stage line up, but Swampert, Blaziken, and Sceptile? Swampert is the only competently designed pokemon of the trio.
