In the past the legendary space-dwelling Pokemon Eternatus descended to Galar and spread Galar Particles around, causing the sky to darken mid-day and for random Pokemon to Dynamax, becoming gigantic, and rampaging. This was called the Darkest Day. He was stopped by Zacian and Zamazenta, who defeated and sealed Eternatus, and the two were recognized as heroes that saved Galar. This didn't set well with the Galarian nobility, who were eventually forgotten about because people came to appreciate the Pokemon more.
Sordward and Shielbert are descendants of those butthurt nobles, and conspired to gain recognition and be lauded as the true nobility of Galar, so they hid all evidence that Zacian and Zamazenta defeated Eternatus, and did their best to rewrite the history books to say their ancestors defeated it instead. Predictably, this goes poorly when Eternatus breaks free of its seal and causes the Darkest Day again, and Zacian and Zamazenta are called to defend the region once more.
