>>55666263For me, I just think the art direction is disgusting.
The grass looks like fuzzy clumps of mould. The colours look like they took the GBA games, cranked up the saturation but made it way too dark. Kind of the opposite problem of X/Y which was bright but washed out. For a region that was supposed to have a tropical resort feel, it doesn't feel that way at all.
They replaced most of the trees with "dark grass that you can't walk on because we say so". It completely ruins places like Petalburg Woods when there's just a couple of sparse trees every now and then. So what the fuck is blocking out the sun? If the issue was polygon count there are ways around that. After all, there's only one camera angle. Every tree doesn't need to be fully modeled, just look at gen 4. Then again, they can't even put two Pokemon on-screen at once without tanking the framerate, so why would I expect anything different.
The cave wall texture they used is abhorrent and trypophobia inducing. Many of the HUD elements have very obvious JPEG artifacting for some reason. The textures are all pixellated and low res, but that was a problem in all the 3DS Pokemon games.
Honestly, if they didn't fuck up the graphics so bad I wouldn't be so put off by them. The gameplay is... Pokemon. It's acceptable. Even if it didn't quite live up to Emerald a decade earlier.
