Why did they get rid of PSS in Gen 7 and replace it with Festival Plaza? The PSS interface worked perfectly and using internet features was easy, in Gen 7 you had to open a completely different map and connect every time you wanted to use the internet features, it was so obtrusive

US/UM’s festival plaza will become pretty impossible without good RNG and event then you could still be fucked.
Otherwise you just need three 3DS and three copies of US/UM to do it locally.
Good thing is rank 30 is as far as you need to go for the glasses and anything past that is for completion sake.

It sucks, but at least ORAS has some stuff that can work as an approximation for their most important non-battle connectivity features, and if you have a hacked console injecting StreetPass is possible. It was bad enough Gen 5's tag mode sucked shit, but XY has zero excuse, Game Freak had to have played Dragon Quest 9 they're Japanese it's like a law of nature they have to play the latest DQ game.

More true than I care to admit but I have had a few kino matches against people in ORAS over the past few days. Just hope I’m able to get that one game in to save on the in-game VS Recorder where both my opponent and I give it our best shot and it comes down to the wire on who wins.

Yes and no.
Service developers need to essentially understand packet captures sent from the console/game in order to write software that interprets these inputs and sends the proper responses for the clients for basically all games and features if we want to have a 100% recovery rate.
If you haven't been making packet captures, making sure you know exactly what is going on in each by truncating your time online and only doing one or two different things, there will be less source data to go off of and the overall recovery project will take longer. Saying that it'll just come back instantly after the shutdown is very simply putting it and there's not a magical on/off switch for network connections. Nintendo never releases the source code for their online services, so effectively servers that interpret inputs have to be built up from scratch.
