Scarlet and violet are better in this regard because they try to make an actual story, the downside being it doesn't go past the most surface level tropes.
Nemona is just friendly rival, but brown tomboy and a bit of creepy obsessive girl.
Penny is just there. Their story is more about the other not gym leaders.
Arven is the best potential out of the three, I actually feel good healing his dog. But then they just skip over the face he's now an orphan because his parents are fucking dead and a robot.
Kieran is the best supporting character, he goes through shit and comes back better for it. It's the closest thing to a complete story arc ruined by the fact it's still a pokemon game so you have no choice in how the story goes. You have to lie to him, you have to ruin his dreams and turn him into a mess. There's no option to not be a massive cunt to the poor guy.
It's taking steps in the right direction but the only reason the Scarlet and Violet story is seen fondly is because the bar was set so low.
Also why the fuck can't we have more pokemon npcs to be friends with. They don't always have to be porygon phone. I want my own pikachu to rape.
