When it all comes down to it; Gen 1 = Classic Gen 2+ = Nugen You know why? Because when the average normie thinks about Pokemon, they think about that classic Gen 1 series, where it all started. They're not thinking about Swalot. Skuntank or Garbodor. They're thinking about Pikachu, Charizard, Meowth, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Eevee, Psyduck, Mr. Mime and much more. They're thinking about Ash, Brock and Misty, not Liko and her gay bestie Roy. They're thinking about the good ol days of Pokemania, not Pokemon Go "to the polls". Whether you like it or not, Gen 1 is the definitive image of Pokemon while everything else is nerd triviashit. So, all of this talk about where nugen started is irrelevant because in the eyes of Gen 1, they're all nugen.

Nah, Gen 3+ is nugen. You need to stop being jealous that Gen 2 is part of the classic era. It was directed by Satoshi Tajiri, so it is as much part of the official canon as Gen 1 is. Everything Gens 3-9 is nugen. End of story.

And Marill (Orange Islands, considered Gen 1 anime in the west)
And Snubbull (Pikacu's vacation, released as part of the first movie)
And Ho-oh (first fucking episode of the anime lmfao)
etc. etc.
Gen 2 is Pokemania, it's just a fact at this point.

I feel like modern /vp/ has this thing where you can tell most Pokemaniafags are larpers because they can’t actually recount any experience they supposedly had, and people on this site in general are too creatively bankrupt and lacking in social contexts to make up a completely lie in its place

They think there's a Pokémon named Rhydon, when it's not.
Rhyhorn is a thing, but not Rhydon,

>>55748471 This. Plus EVERYONE was hyped for gen 2 - the excitement over "pikablu", the rumor mill around all the untranslated/zero context screenshots and artwork and stuff in the magazines, all the "my dad works at Nintendo" shit kids would pull. It just fizzled out because it took 2 years after gen 1 to come out in the west, and that was an era where all the big game franchises were yearly releases and new stuff was popping up all the time. But even then it didn't fall in popularity to the point you were uncool for playing it until gen 3, which only mattered if your friends sucked or you already had no friends and admitting to playing pokemon was pretty much your first impression on potential new friends.

>>55748539 Yup. I remember how hyped everyone was by the fall of 2000. Pokemania fizzled out the next year, but the run up to the release of GS in the west was definitely apart of Pokemania.

>>55748691 Gen 3 everyone said pokemon was for babies, the new ones looked like digimon, the movies stopped getting widespread theatrical releases outside of Japan, stores no longer had entire isles of the toy department dedicated to pokemon, and the number of old pokemon you couldn't get in RS without a gameshark until more games came out over the next several years definitely killed it's popularity. It was firmly over. Gen 4 people where legitimately surprised to hear new pokemon games were still happening but since it was more forgotten than anything nobody gave a fuck if you liked it or not, it was just odd since it wasn't old enough to be nostalgic but too old to be relevant enough to make or break your coolness. Gen 5 I can't really give an assessment of the general population's reactions because I only really interacted with my classmates and as a computer science major we were all nerds who loved it, same for gen 6 except with my first real job and smaller social circle. 7 got a huge boost from Go and the 20th anniversary made the series retro enough that people cared again plus TPCi hiring celebrities to market shit through social media. Then everyone seeing how it was now vs their last memories of it when the screen wasn't even backlit and you had to fiddle with changing batteries and cables combined with the switch's popularity had people thinking every new thing Game Freak shit out was SO MUCH BETTER than what they remember that suddenly they were breaking sales records all over the place.
