This is Pokemon Opalo, or Opal. It has 16 gyms, a story about native Americans n shiet, and there's some regional variants and fakemon starters. It's also Spanish and has a shit English translation, but that just adds to the fun.
This game has been done in the past by a tripfag, but other tripfags haven't played it, so might as well revisit it for the lulz.

You can have well made kaizo fights as well as shitty made easier (relatively) fights. Vyglass' Mech comes to mind as one of the few fights in Clover that's low quality despite it being very easy if you know what you're doing because it's often a very binary fight; you either know exactly how to dismantle it (often with a sun+fire gem boosted overheat) or you're playing a team that revolves around a playstyle that isn't applicable to the fight at all and are forced to counterbuild it specifically. The Shadow Council and Vyglass fights before and after the Mech, despite being harder, are leagues above the Mech on a game design level.

However, for each one you let him utilize, the fight gets a bit tougher and is easily one of the most interesting gamestate literacy tests in not only Clover but pokemon fangames as a whole that asks the player to switch between offensive and defensive tactics regularly depending on what effects like TR or Veil are active.

There's some kaizo fights I thought were somewhat clever (DemICE building a water team around sun in Urmumium, or Madelis's dark crystal cave fight in Madame Moto) but even then I don't think any of them can really be salvaged since the design comes from a place of "I'm going to restrict your options so tightly that you're just at the mercy of RNG and very limited teambuilding".

Ironically despite me hating Rejuvenation, I think my favorite fight happens during karma files were you have to face 5 opponents who all have their unique team styles, there's 2 pairs of tards that fight in doubles against you, so it can be tricky, the game very much forces you to pick up everything you learned across the journey to beat this fight.

I think the game is meant to be nuzlocked, there's a whole nuzlocke guide for the game floating around somewhere I think designed by Eric himself and obviously the game is mostly just 'normal games+ difficulty'. there's a single pokemon in the entire very small dex that can beat the lead (a pre-burn guts pokemon that can intimidate you twice and has massive attack and speed and an assault vest) with no RNG, and even that requires using a hidden ability capsule, of which you only get one of in the entire game as far as we could tell.
...if you couldn't tell demice is very autistic, and moto is only marginally less so, though madame moto was probably the worst shit i've done here that wasn't virtualization

the hidden ability capsule itself is also locked behind a similar fight with similar mechanics but with only triple megas and 6 Pokemon (though since the game wasn't playtested, if you lose to that fight the event breaks and you can just walk right past them to get the capsule)
